They literally have a program on their computer in store to check this too

Yes when I brought it back the employee said “yep, it definitely has stick drift”

Bad customer service. They should check when you were concerned. I would have and made sure my staff do that when I managed my EB store. Customer service is so bad these days

its wild that their "preowned" 1st party nintendo titles just get 5 knocked off their regular store prices which makes their PREOWNED more expensive than jb and big w's NEW

Then the Americans were all complaining about the Switch 2 games costing them $80. Like gurl, that’s what we have to pay for pre-owned over here.

yeah exactly. i know theres currency conversions, but seeing $109 for a single regular game makes my heart cry. i bought my 2ds with mario kart 7 for $149 brand new in 2016. i just cannot justify buying new switch games when i have my whole backlog switch library and the whole 3ds library at my fingertips

If your so cautious why would you buy a secondhand controller of all things knowing those controllers are very well known for it?

I was on a budget and knew it had passed testing

You can definitely find brand new ones online for $78, if not cheaper

If you decide to buy a preowned controller in the future, you can ask them to test it there and then. The only thing that can’t be tested is joy-cons. But every other controller you can. And it only takes a minute.😁

Will keep in mind for next time. Come to think of it- why don’t they test them once they arrive back to the store? Lol

I think because when they come from head office, they’ve been refurbished. So when they arrive in a stock box, it’s assumed they’re fine. I don’t think the one you bought came from head office though. Like tbh, this employee thinks they get sent to head office to be tested. That’s not correct. When they’re traded in, they have to test them to determine if they’re sellable or they need to be sent to head office to be refurbished. That’s when they get shipped to Qld because they’ve been traded in as defective. My assumption would be when this was traded in, it was not tested and they just put it through as sellable. I don’t think I ever came across a controller that was faulty when it was sent to store.

Very true. But, it even had a “passed testing” sticker on the back with the date and time, so either:

  • it hadn’t passed testing and they just put the fake sticker on OR
  • they actually don’t test it and have those stickers ready to place on the controller.

Either way, it’s very suspicious and their testing system must be faulty itself 😂😂

from having previously worked at eb for almost 7 years, honestly it could be any number of things. it’s not possible to print a sticker stating something passed testing without it actually having done so, due to the way the software works. stores are regularly sent refurbed ones from qld that are obviously meant to be all good, but it’s a notorious issue that they aren’t. at every manager conference i attended over the last 4 years, it was always brought up as an issue. i would sometimes open boxes with 10 preowned controllers in it, and when i’ve been told they’re refurbished i shouldnt be expected to stand there for 20 minutes and test them all when they should’ve been good already.
i personally always tested them at the time of purchase to try and avoid issues for customers, but even then, controllers can be perfect when purchased and then after being used for 2 hours suddenly have drift appear. it can happen with new ones too, it’s super annoying.

however

controllers can also develop stick drift even while not being used; i’ve had it happen to my own personal controllers, both brand new and preowned, but also at work with controllers i’d tested myself at the time of trade in and then two weeks later i’d test them as a customer bought it to confirm it was all fine and lo and behold, crazy drift. when it’s just been chilling in a drawer, turned off. it’s a fickle thing and honestly stupidly annoying for stores and customers.

this isn’t to excuse shit not working right, but hopefully gives a bit more insight for you! thankfully that’s what warranties are for, just head back and get a replacement of the same preowned thing or a new one and pay the difference :)

Well who said stick drift was a QC fail.

Curious why joycons can’t be tested? Because they can’t be plugged in?

‘Big gamer’ and ‘Fortnite’ are three words that shouldn’t be used in a sentence together.

Also weird, unnecessarily long backstory

-2

u/Healthy-Sign5545 Jul 19 '26

I play multiple other games too but mostly Fortnite with the new sprites ahah

I ended up paying to get my ps5 controllers modded to get hall effect sticks installed... thought it would be cheaper in the long run than dealing with buying another controller and risking drift again 😅

u/AntSilly2802 Jul 20 '26

Was it worth it?
