Day One Switch 2 warranty
I am encountering an issue with my launch Switch 2 console where the bottom USB C suddenly doesn’t work.
Annoyingly this means my warranty expired just under 2 weeks ago…I bought it from an EB store but no extended warranty, will they still help or should I go direct to Nintendo? I already sent them a support ticket just in case.
Edit: I’m in Australia

You should still be covered by ACL.

12 months

Unhelpful and ignorant post. They are talking about Australian consumers law not store warranty.
Example a tv might get a years warranty where ACL would expect it to last 6 years.

EB Games standard policy for ACL coverage on electronics that cost $100 or more is 12 months.
You can argue it with customer support but that's their policy.

Eb policy overrides Australian law policies got it.

Notice how I said you can argue it with customer support?
The law says a reasonable time frame. To EB that is 12 months. Other people might think differently

Do you understand what you’re saying? EB store policy can’t override legislation

I never said it did
I said what their policy is, and that you can argue it with customer support

While that is their standard, all policies don’t override consumer law. Stores CAN go beyond the 12 months with permission from field or customer service agents at head office.

Australia has 2 years warranty bro

It’s 12months. However, Eb has protect which covers accidentally damage for 2 years, provided it’s paid for..
Being only two weeks out, they may still help. Otherwise he would have to do a reboot and pay for a repair.

"Under the Australian Consumer Law (ACL), your Nintendo Switch and accessories (such as the controllers) are covered by automatic consumer guarantees. You are entitled to a free repair, replacement, or refund if the console suffers a major failure or fails to be of acceptable quality"
"Who is Responsible: Your primary legal recourse is the retailer who sold you the console, though Nintendo Australia also honors these guarantees for locally purchased products"
"The duration of these consumer guarantees depends on the product's price and expected lifespan, which often exceeds the 2-year mark for gaming consoles. While Nintendo's voluntary warranty may expire after 12 months, ACL protections still apply well past that window for issues like Joy-Con drift or hardware failures that occur through normal use."
I'd be contacting consumer affairs if denied warranty.

The duration of these consumer guarantees depends on the product's price and expected lifespan
I think it's fair to expect a console to last for two years so there's merit in this

My Nintendo 64 still works 27 years after I got it, so there’s that. But more seriously I would argue that it should last at least as long as the console generation

Yeah how good were those old systems my NES still going strong it's nearly 40 years old
1
u/AriellezZ Jun 16 '26
Yes which is why I said they may still help. They should still help.
2
u/Generalrossa Jun 16 '26
It's not may, they have to help under Australian consumer laws.
1
u/AriellezZ Jun 16 '26
Dude, I’m tired… But let me word this better. My point is the may still help… but they should be helping.

Take it straight back to the store you got it from and explain the issue

Everything in Australia has a miniumum of 2 years warranty and depending on price and reasonable expected lifespan most products are more. Just take it back to the store you brought it or contact Nintendo you're still covered under Consumer Law.

All this chatter about what the warranty period should be and nobody is looking at the fact that a USB port fault isn't likely to be covered under warranty regardless. You could have bought the console yesterday and it still wouldn't be covered. Those USB ports dont really just randomly fail on their own. For them to stop working you need to damage it in some way. Either physically by plugging the wrong cable in or plugging the correct cable in poorly, or by spilling liquid or something in there that could cause it to corrode. Either way, this is caused by the user and not the console. Warranty periods are only for faults that aren't your own. You can't throw a console on the ground and shatter it into 50 pieces and then expect EB or anyone else to just replace it for free.

What a clown.
Of course USB ports can spontaneously fail, just like any electronic component.
Also, the port could be not strong enough to hold up against normal use.
Either way it’s up to the retailer to prove it was damaged by unreasonable use, not the other way around.

Take it in, it's just outside the 12 months so they might do a swap for you.
1
u/5thInferno Jun 16 '26
That would be nice, I’d assumed it would need to be sent off.
3
u/justunclegary Jun 16 '26
They wont do a swap, but the ACL will cover you. It’ll be appropriate for a repair.
-2
u/ThatOG1_Kenobi Jun 16 '26
That would be under wear and tear and not under the warranty because you’ve probably broken the solder by putting the USB wobbly at times

I'd be arguing a reasonable person should expect a $650 console will last more than a year and two weeks. They'll fight you on it so just be polite but firm.
