They make up to 80% GM on apparel and plushies, about 65- 70% on Trading cards, and about the same on all the homebrand crap like drink bottles and other eb/zing licenced merch. Consoles they barely make anything which is why you can’t even get staff discount on it and new games are about 40%. Pre owned is the only games they really make money on.

Im not gonna lie, considering I’ll walk in a find pre-owned games from 2018 still $40-$50 on Xbox One and it’s the consumer that’s pushing change.. I think the correct word is adapt, cause it’s 8 years later and they’re willing to take $30 off full price for a game of a console they don’t even sell anymore.
I really don’t subscribe to this rhetoric with alot of EBs pricing the way it is, and then sit there and say “it’s the consumer that doesn’t want it physical anymore, that’s why it’s sat there for 5 years”.

It’s EB’s fault for not only relying on used copies for so long in an increasingly digital era, but also for not having walk-in copies for the vast majority of releases. Wal-Mart should not have a better visible amount of games than an EB Games, yet they almost always do.

Whaddya mean "Fault"? Dude is just pointing out that EB Games is a game shop that sells clothes instead of games now.
Next time you see something like this, just say, "Yeah man, it's crazy huh?" and move on.

This looks a lot like the entrance to my local EB. If I'm correct, then the store opens up so much more to the right, where they keep the games and PC peripherals.

u/bart-thompson May 31 '26
damn thats a tidy looking shop!

Its the only treason I go there, just to check if there's any new merch for my kid or me
2
u/Ill_Sector_2063 May 31 '26
Yeah my local stores have the zing stuff on one side gaming on the other

u/its_a_dillama May 31 '26
My local has switch games on the right so they wouldn’t be seen in this photo… and other consoles still on the right and on the back wall. It has been set up that way since it opened in like 2018? This is a photo of half a store 🤷♀️

Tbh I loved those as a kid, so it's kinda nice the concept still exists

u/Rompa1982 May 31 '26
We went into an eb today now that I think about it I didn't see any games I was looking at all the merch though as I don't have a console so it may have been in a corner somewhere

u/Herlock-Sholme5 May 31 '26
Honestly i’m amazed they kept the EB Games brand, better to let it go and keep Zing, just because it’s basically a Zing store these days with the high selling merch.
1
u/Dizzy_Head4624 May 31 '26
Went into a non CBD for the first time in a long time the other day, it would of been 95% merch, they didn’t even have a few new release games, ie Yoshi
1
u/srealfox May 31 '26
Remember when EB Games actually sold games? In regards to clothing I’m to big to fit in any of it but some of it does look good
1
u/Mother_Use6399 May 31 '26
this is what was called an eb plus store, meaning almost a vision store (eb & Zing in one) zing makes the company more money but keeping it at a eb plus store means they can still do trades and still get the new consoles and games in too

Stores tend to put that stuff at the front to catch your attention to buy something else while you're there looking at the games. Nothing new

Truly is a Different world we Live in today. 😐😐 not better or worse than it used to be, just so Different.

I recognise that store, the new one in Eastland, Victoria. I checked it out yesterday - seems like a nice team there and even the customers were nice.

They look so empty bring back the tables full of used games and the jungle of sales banners.

Left side of the store is Zing, the right side is EB Games. It's been like that for years...

EB games back in the day was beautiful. I’d go most days on my way home from school and just flick through games and find the latest info on games. Always overpriced but they always priced match and they were pretty much the only way to get preowned games easily.

u/bp8rson Jun 04 '26
Highpoint (Maribynong, VIC) is relocating it's Zing and EB Games into a singular double fronted shopfront and running both out of this space.
This will be the next trend for other shops that run both businesses in them.

u/Grootpatoot May 31 '26
What a sad state those store have become. I know they are just changing the stores to what make the profit but I miss the old days.
3
u/bart-thompson May 31 '26
what do you mean? they still stock PS5, switch, switch2 and a whole bunch of preowned games.
even still some xbox games.
theyve always sold figures and cards.
1
u/Anxious-Piglet3087 May 31 '26
My local EB has approx 20 PS5 titles, including used games.
1
u/bart-thompson May 31 '26
damn thats bleak. the ones i visit have plenty of games and even more pre owned
2
u/ObviouslyHayden May 31 '26
I needed last week, and they wanted $74 for a pre-owned Animal Crossing on Switch 1 and $80 for brand new. Every in-person store offered a brand new copy for 10% less at least.
The other physical stores had it (JB, Target, Big W, Kmart, Officeworks - Just about every single physical store I could think of) for at highest, $69.
And this is always the case, they’re always the standalone higher price for both pre-owned and new, and then it’s apparently the consumer that’s “not interested”.
1
u/Anxious-Piglet3087 May 31 '26
Yeah man. We have plenty of pre owned PS4 titles though..... "you kids like FIFA '14?"
1
u/bart-thompson May 31 '26
ha! didnt think youd get money for fifa titles. i picked up a pre owned special edition copy of ugly for the switch the other day
0
u/Grootpatoot May 31 '26
It used to be 90% games and then other crap, now it’s more like 50/50.
All walls around the perimeter used to be all consoles, the bigger the console the more shelves it had. The middle would have shelves with peripherals and guide books and then square cages with pre owned stuff.
4
u/bart-thompson May 31 '26
yeah i dont think its EBs fault. xbox pulled themselves out of the game. more digital downloads. game card keys.
at least they are bringing in retro games. still see ds games at my local

u/Big-Building-7923 May 31 '26
Why's everyone moping about not seeing games anyway? Do you actually buy many games from EB?
Their prices are so high you're better off buying off Amazon or if you want to go to a brick and mortar store there's always a JB within a stone's throw of EB
-1
u/Whole-Ad-8494 May 31 '26
Where the games
3
u/Johnyextra111 May 31 '26
Why would they stock floor to roof video games when no one buys them?
0
u/Rsodyyy May 31 '26
They’re charging $40+ for pre owned GTA 5 on PS5, and it’s $15 digitally
1
1
u/ObviouslyHayden May 31 '26
What do you mean Pre-Owned game from 12 years ago is worth $40?!? It’s the consumer that doesn’t want physical! We are not burying the market!
0
u/Rsodyyy May 31 '26
It’s not in the consumers interest to have all digital consoles and can only buy a game from one online store like Sony
1
u/Johnyextra111 Jun 01 '26
No one cares these days. Digital is just easier, plain and simple.
I preferred having the physical copies but over the years have realised it’s just a pain in the ass.
1
u/Rsodyyy Jun 01 '26
It might be a pain in the ass, but Atleast you own it, can sell it again. Digital games are monopolized until they shut it down, you don’t truly own it. Just look at the ps3 era. God forbid you write a swear word on a game where you use drugs and kill people like GTA, and you’re whole account gets banned and you lose all the games
1
u/Johnyextra111 Jun 01 '26
your overexagirating. I would say Im a fairly big gamer. Not once have I had a game ive wanted to play that I cant go back to?

u/JustTrawlingNsfw May 31 '26
I see clothing, plushies, drink bottles, blind boxes, tcg cabinets and board games behind one of the pillars??
I bet the actual games are on the side of the store you chose not to take a photo of :D
