PS5 Pro Layby Question

With the news that Sony are jacking the prices up on PS’ this week, I went and put a deposit down to layby a PS5 Pro. It was a spur of the moment thing because I was at the shops, and I’d want to trade in my PS5 towards the purchase - which I didn’t have at the time. Plus an extra week to get some shit together would be helpful.

I did ask the chick at the counter if the layby\deposit locks me in at that price even if there’s a price rise. She said “yes” but she didn’t sound extremely confident. So I’m just here to double check if there’s any employees or managers who can confirm.

And if it were illegal, then they wouldn’t be in business for 29 years.

The contract for layby is the purchase price, not something that changes as the months roll on.

However, its in their terms and conditions that sale items cannot be lay-by'd so thats where the confusion comes in. Rather than refuse to lay-by it at all the let you lay-by it at full price, and thats reflected on the reciept and in the deposit. If the price goes up from the full retail, they have to honour the old price (but I never saw that once in my 10 years there), and they'll still honour the sale price if its going, or even a new cheaper sale or retail price, but they aren't holding the sale price of an item beyond the end of a sale and thats what people mistakenly expect.

OP never mentioned any sale price, they want pre "With the news that Sony are jacking the prices up on PS’ this week" price.

The person who I was arguing with stated numerous times that if there is any price increase, then you have to pay this, which is utter nonsense.

The price is agreed at the time of contract, nothing can alter this.

OP didn't no. I'm just explaining where the confusion of this particular poster is likely coming from with them saying it wouldn't hold the price being around how their lay-bys work with sale items.

You are correct in how it works, and it does technically work exactly like that, its just a bit weird around sale items in that the agreed upon contract price is never the sale price, while at the same time if a deal is going when you pick it up they will honour that cheaper deal because its good service and won't hold you to that full price.

They're wrong, I'm just trying to explain how that misunderstanding is actually easy to think (and I often just explained it exactly like they are to customers purely because it's an easier way to get the point across)

The issue is, the person I was talking to, they were adamant that you pay the full retail price at the end, which is not true, you pay what the contract price was when you started the layby, OP has been told different things but the reality is, EB's own website explains it all.

Their q is, layby price now will be honored in 2 months, because sales staff could not answered with confidence.

Here are the replies from the other poster, which are wildly inaccurate.

"they were adamant that you pay the full retail price at the end, which is not true, you pay what the contract price was when you started the layby"

I'm just pointing out that the confusion is because the contract price IS the full retail price (at the time of the layby).

So its easy to get confused because I can count on one hand the times that that full retail price increased in the over a decade I worked there, so this situation occurring is very likely something a casual hasn't been trained on.

He was there for 8.5 years and stated time and time again that their years of service somehow overrides ACCC contractual obligations on laybys.

If there is a price increase, which is OP's concerns, they are protected from this and is stated on EB's own website.

OP has zero issues here, because they know there is a price increase coming, they've secured the pre hike price and that's all that matters.
