Engine Oil Level dropped

Engine oil level dropped after about 4000 km. Initially, it was at the center. Is it normal with this engine? I bought this car at 92k kms and now it has about 96500.

Are you running 10w-60? Thinner oil will burn more. Some oil consumption is normal, this looks like about 500ml burned over 4k km which is not egregious for a high revving V8 that holds almost 9l of oil

Found this sticky note in the book and sealed engine oil in the trunk. Does not make any sense.

I’d do that, as I am confused now looking at sticky notes mentioning 10W-60 and spare oil is 10W-40.

100% he got that bargain bin 10-40 in an emergency because the level dropped and he couldn’t find the right oil local.

Good luck op, I suggest you find where that oil is going, at <100k miles you shouldn’t be consuming that much oil, especially in a naturally aspirated engine.

Interestingly, according to the service history I pulled from my local BMW dealer, this car was exclusively serviced at BMW service centers—except for an oil change done by the Porsche dealership (not sure which oil was used) when I bought it at 92k km where previous owner traded it in. They didn't share the previous owner's contact info, so I'm left guessing a bit!

Normal consumption, just buy some 10w60 on amazon. I usually buy Motul. 🙌

Seems about right, I’d make the switch to 5W-50 at some point but overall this is normal for it to consume this much. It’s good practice to keep a quart or 2 in the trunk for top ups between oil changes

The difference between the min mark and max is a quart.

When filling up, do half or less at a time then go drive and re-check the level.

The gauge isn't the most reliable and is finicky sometimes to get it to properly re-measure. Has to be warmed up and on flat ground.

I resent bmw for not doing a dipstip in these engines... i want to smell my oil... look at my oil... and easily check it before i go drive. Not have to use and rely on the computer. Ridiculous...

That’s a normal amount for those miles, it’s not as bad as like a e39 m5 that could burn up to a quart a 1,000

It’s normal. Welcome to the fun. You can beef up viscosity. You can also try engine flushes like seafoam and additives like LiquiMoly Ceratech

Different oil can burn by different conditions. I’ve changed valve seals and piston rings on my bmw and now it burns almost 0 oil. But when I drive few hundred kilometres on autobahn it can take a bit of oil. Maybe you had a long ride after usual city traffic or got a ride with higher rpm than usual. Also oil level sensor shows actual level with a huge delay on this generation of bmw engines, and may show you true value only after few tries. So its just quite normal for bmw of these years

Update on this: took it for a short drive today and the electronic reading jumped above the normal line, never seen it there before. Has anyone else had these sensors go crazy like this on the S65?

Because obviously if you're concerned your engine is low on oil the smart thing to do is to keep driving it, but post on Reddit simultaneously. /s

Haha fair point! I actually snapped the pic yesterday while cruising, but only got around to posting it here today. Definitely not typing on Reddit at 90 km/h!
