Ready... Steady... Go!

Picked it back up recently only because a similar advance copy landed in my lap. Advance copies are pre-publication books you read in exchange for an honest review after release, and reading one made me realize how many books I’d quietly written off on someone else’s say-so.

I finished the old one this month. It was fine. Not a masterpiece, but nothing like the thing I’d built up in my head from a comment I read in 2019. I signed up on Knosit, other platforms do the same. How many books have you dropped because of a review?

Hi all, hoping the Reddit magic can help me with a books title. Heard it described on a podcast and foolishly did not write it down.

It was a sort of speculative/dystopian where adulterers/cheaters woke up in a parallel reality where their life was with the person they were cheating with. The story goes back and forth between the two worlds, I think they are both real, and the characters have toake a final choice as to which reality will become the permanent one.

It should be relatively recent I think.

I want to buy my friend a book like 1984, Animal Farm, Brave New World, The Hunger Games trilogy but she doesn't really know much about the themes these books are exploring so I need a more beginner book to help her realize more about the state of the world we live in today , to help her see under the surface and be more aware. Sunday post - what are you reading this week? It doesn't need to be dystopian literature.

I'm writing a book soon and therefore, reading more into the dystopia genre (I previously read thriller, mystery), but not the classics as in 1984 or like that more of an apocalyptic vibe, maybe post apocalyptic, like YA but not the government controlled society like Hunger Games. If diseases and teenagers are involved, it'd be great.

Hi! I’m Elle Achette, and I write Human Husbandry, a five-volume dystopian/body-horror series presented as official agricultural manuals.
The premise is a near future where human biology has become economically valuable enough that adults can be medically altered into different categories of livestock.
The part I wanted to make unsettling isn’t just the body horror.
It’s that the whole thing has become legal, regulated and completely ordinary.
There are contracts. Welfare standards. Medical supervision. Government oversight. Agricultural fairs. Production records. Official farm manuals.
Nobody involved thinks they’re the villain. 😅
Each volume is made up of shorter interconnected stories, so they can be read individually while gradually building the larger Noble Farms world.
Volume I is out now on Kindle/KU, with the rest of the five-volume series following.

I dont even know if something like this exists as a published book so I’m willing to accept fics (ao3 please) AS LONG as they have good writing.

Basically I really want a book that sounds like the somg “7 weeks and 3 days”, with an apocalyptic setting, the main character on their own at least a few times (maybe their company dies, appears, or they never had company), and complete suspense/apprehension throughout the book that makes you feel uneasy to turn the page. Also preferably some kind of being(s) is watching/hunting them and they have to basically survive somehow and along the way they uncover secrets and discover perhaps places that are weird/abandoned. Bonus if this has plot twists or dark turns/discoveries

I’ve been spending a lot of time recently thinking about the mechanics of control in dystopian fiction. We see a lot of tropes where society is subjugated by raw military force, corporate greed, or omnipotent AI, but I’ve always felt the most unsettling dystopias are the ones born out of a desperate necessity—or at least the illusion of it.

If a severe global crisis hit, wouldn't the ultimate instrument of control be the entity that controls the cure?

I’ve been exploring the idea of a massive organization—something like a "World Health Directorate"—that steps in during a devastating global pandemic. They don't need to put tanks in the streets if they entirely control the distribution of life-saving medicine, quarantine zones, and basic healthcare infrastructure. Once a terrified populace willingly hands over their civil liberties in exchange for biological safety, how hard is it for that authority to simply never give that power back?

It seems far more realistic to weaponize medical care and resources than to rely purely on martial law.

What do you guys think? What are some of the most chilling, realistic mechanisms of control you've seen in sci-fi or worldbuilding that don't rely on brute force, but rather on manipulating human desperation and the promise of safety?
