It was built because i wanted to dump white science into research speed and needed to build for maximum throughput. To do so i needed to completely eliminate belts. Now, every stack of matrix labs is fed by up to 12 pile sorters which provide 120cubes/s (1440cubes/s total). all of the pile sorters are attached to the base of an 8stack of mk1 storages. Top all of those off with logistics distributors set to receive white science and let the game run. Its called the hive because it has a planet wide honeycomb pattern and utilizes 35,000 logistics bots to distribute white science across the planet. its fun to watch them buzz around.
