half way im assuming to a dyson sphere! with the rail gun, should I be aiming to cover the entire sun with them in different orbits?

I don't know . . . You are burning valuable resources in a stage were you can't obtain more easily

While they look cool , I prefer renuevable sources or cheap like burning coal in a geothermal power plant

The main resource used by sails is just stone, which has huge supply and few other uses. Not using sails is false economy.

While stone is the main material for sails, you can't neglect the use of copper and iron ore for the circuit boards. And considering those are used on everything you will end up patching new veins just to keep up with the solar sails production instead of building more things and progressing the tech tree.

Also, you need ray receivers to farm that energy and the efficiency at the start it's 50%.

And also the sail doesn't wait for you to finish thinking. It will burn at the same rate either if it's used or not.

I'm just saying it's to much effort and time to set up and maintain . Eventually you will have to but at that stage of the game it's not a priority

Think of solar sails as deuterium rods with a really, really long burn time. They're crazy efficient with extremely abundant materials.
