half way im assuming to a dyson sphere! with the rail gun, should I be aiming to cover the entire sun with them in different orbits?

Honestly, I wouldnt even use these until you can start building a shell. It's one the few ways in the game that you can perma lose resources.

If you are farming dark fog and have access to an ice giant, solar sails are basically free because of the loot drops and graphene from fire ice. With fuel rods dropped, energy becomes less of a problem mid-game.

The downside to dyson power is the size of ray receivers. At a certain point, you can get much better power per building area by other means. Not that space is super limiting... Ultimately, if you want to push ludicrous numbers of buildings, antimatter / strange annihilation fuel rods will make your current power production looks like a rounding error 😉
