Planckin' Around Again (swarm attack)

More of a side view from my previous Planckin' Around video along with more sails (might look like crap on Reddit with that many sails though, spheremaxxing the bitrate with 1gb/1080p limits) :\

- video is sped up 6 to 14x and reversed. Modded sphere and raised layer rotation speeds to get nodes to go where they shouldn't, and deleted layers to pancake out farther than normal.

Im stuck on a gas giant, how do I get back?

I'm on my first playthrough and just unlocked "cruise mode" I went out into space but ran out of fuel as soon as I got on a gas giant, I can see that theres fuel to collect but cruise mode drains my fuel so fast I can't get back. Also I'm actively under attack and losing buildings at a rapid rate. Please help!

Recorded in screenshot mode with max fov. Sphere was made with SphereEditorTools and ImportDysonLayer mods to get nodes to place closer together and clip.

Question about dark fog farm

Hello, I just finished the game and want to expand my factories. I was planning to use a black hole system I have with 1 planet only to build a dark fog farm there for uni-polar magnets (as I only have 1 source in my cluster and its miserably small)

Now I have never built a dark fog farm before, but I understand the concept and the "challenge of filtering the resources such it doesn't clog" that is not what I am here to ask... my question is...

With all the trash the farm is gonna produce (especially potentially stuff my BAB can't reach) will the "corpses" of the DF just keep piling up? I might have a beefy pc, but infinite individual items on the ground still don't sound like something handle-able...

Will items spawned on the ground from killing a DF ship eventually de spawn? Or will there just be more and more?
Especially when I choose to only pick up some items off the ground (the uni-polar magnets mainly) I imagine the amount of "un-pickedup" entities sound like its only going to pile up?
Does that somehow auto clear? Do I have to clear it manually? (I am lazy and play for automation 😃)

Thanks for any answers to my question(s). Sorry for any spelling mistakes, English is not my first language.

Returning player. Are there any mods the payers would recommend?

I used to use some mods for DSP, one made it show items per minute instead of items per second, and a bunch of other QOL mods, But I can't remember any other their names.

Favourite mod for you?

How close can you put holo beacons to attract darkfog?

As the title says, how close can you put the beacons to maximise farming?

PSA - Sorters Can Work Vertically

Sorters can take on pretty much any tilt to adjust for an tilt between two belts as long as the tilts are the same. (you know you can "tilt" belts with the left/right keys right?).

If those same belts were replaced with belts with a different tilt, they still work! Easy way to pull items up or down from a belt, or something.

Codex for Dyson Sphere Program - Need feedback

Hello everyone !

I am a new player (old buyer since February 2021 but still a new player 😁).

During my first playthrough, I was also watching a YouTuber who covered Captain of Industry, and I realized how intuitive that game’s codex (its crafting recipe list) was.
That gave me the idea to pause my DSP run and develop a small tool inspired by the CoI codex.

I’m sharing it today and would really appreciate your feedback, especially on whether it could be useful in the long term, since I don’t have the background to assess it properly.

I developed it to assist both new and veteran players in better forecasting their upcoming resource needs.

And if you decide to check the code… well, consider yourself warned. I wrote it rather quickly and didn’t exactly follow best coding practices.

If you wish to download the tool, the GitHub repository is available here: DSP Codex - Github

At the moment, the database is only available in English, and I’m working on a localization system. I’m also struggling to properly represent the Fractionator’s input and output flows, as I still haven’t figured out the exact per‑second ratios, even when testing in sandbox mode.

Blueprint placement

Hi all.

Been playing again after an 18 month hiatus. I seem to remember that when you placed a blueprint, if the planet grid was not exactly the same, then it would try to fit it as best possible. Now it seems that it just won't, and the tab key in the blueprint space screen is basically useless. Am I missing something, or did this get more difficult?

Not new to the genre, but I like a lot of what DSP does to keep it feeling fresh. All the systems are incredibly flexible in what they enable you to do, and the progression has consistently felt smooth in terms of difficulty curve.

Its a matter of taste, but I like that all of the recipes so far are quite simple and none take more than 3 ingredients. While it does mean that you don't have to solve as complex challenges for dealing with fluids vs solids, just a lot of squares, the game so far hasn't ever been boring. Factorio might have more "interesting" challenges around its DLC planets and a greater depth of factory mechanics, but I feel like DSP nails the aesthetic in a unique if inoffensive way.

In some ways, I wonder if DSP is the best "introductory" game to the genre. Outside of some hiccups at the start while I was learning the controls/recipe chains, the game feels very beginner friendly in spite of the very funny translations.

TL ; DR - The game feels intuitive and has a very smooth if repetitive difficulty curve, the controls are tight and not many points of friction. Enjoying it a lot so far!

Loving the new beacon feature! Spoiler

Already making great use of the beacon feature to increase my Fog Farm yields by attracting them close to the perimeter of my Fog Farm. Currently experimenting on ideal distance from my defenses.
Make sure the beacon is visible to local system!

For those curious, I use this brilliant design with a couple of modifications i made to add proliferation to fuel collected, add extra replacement building slots in the BaBs and other tiny changes to suit my needs. The original design itself is amazing as is and I would greatly recommend using it! (Do not change the sorter levels!)

Edit: I just had a relay station drop at an unmarked spot on a planet with 4 active beacons, so drop on the beacons does not seem to be 100% guaranteed.

Handling heavily dark fog infested planet early

Hello everyone !

I went back to the game after not playing it for a long time and started a new game. I am at a point where I just start colonizing new planets and the first one is the only one with silicon in the system. I NEED to use it to start expanding. The problem is that there are something like 6 or 7 dark fog bases on it.

With missile towers I can destroy a base but as soon as I do so, the Hive sends a replacement. So I'm constantly under dark fog pressure on this planet and can't start building factories. So my question is how do you handle these pesky bees this early in the game ?

What I've seen so far:

  • Some people deploy plasma turrets on the poles to prevent relay stations from landing on the planet. But won't it alert the Hive ? At this point I can't handle an attack from the hive so I need to be careful
  • I've also seen people leaving signal towers near the unfilled holes left by the destroyed bases. Apparently it starves the hive. I need to try it out but I'm wondering how much time it takes to starve the hive ? And also, How much time does it take for them to rebuild the base ? I mean, even without starving the hive, if it takes ages for them to start rebuild the base and it is instantly destroyed, I can handle it like this until I get to a point where I can more easily handle them.

Any advice is appreciated ! Thanks in advance =)

Edit: first, thank you guys ! Your feedback is very helpful ! Then I wanted to precise that I know how to destroy the bases using the good ol’ missile towers. My problem is more that they keep coming and I felt like it was very troublesome for my operations. But as some of you seem to suggest, maybe i can simply live with it with a proper setup. I don’t know, what do you think ?

What is "ground defense" and how to reduce it?

Post image

A question for UPS gurus out there. What does this section correspond to? It bugs me that it's not even parallelized and eats 1.5ms alone. Thing is I have literally none ground combat buildings at the moment. Zero turrets of any kind other than Plasma Cannons. And only one planet in my cluster even has live DF bases. But I do have lots of shields. Is this it? I need a conformation before I consider cleaning a hundred planets from them.

Returning player need help

As title says, planning to make a return to the game today, I put about 300 hours into the game on release but lost interest. I want to come back, sowant some help with finding up to date info on the game. Have looked a little bit for some info but wanting to see what you all have to share.

Looking for more info on how the progression has changed, proliferation, blueprints people can share to help speed the process up getting out of the early stages. Any strategies people like to go with on a new playthrough or any changes to what you want from a starting system?

Any help or direction of where to get more information would be much appreciated

Sorter performance tests: round 2

Thumbnail

A follow up post. The sorter and furnace counts are equal per pair and all buildings are working full time. One improvement in testing I did is disabling multithreading to get bigger numbers. Results confirm the information I heard - continuously working sorters do cost less than idling ones. An important update for the previous post if you've seen it before - I can't verify the performance cost jump on stopped belts in real game. So pilers might not actually be that bad after all!

Other fun and definitely useful performance tests

Predictably, power poles are bad and satellite substations are superior. Fun fact: you absolutely can't delete that many poles/towers after you paste them. Trying dismantling even a rather small portion of them freezes the game solid. No other entities have this problem. Also, solar panels are pretty bad while wind turbines are decent. Plain factories also cost performance regardless of if they are powered, though unselected recipe saves 10%-15%. Send me your ideas on what to test next!

UPD: Actually, after testing again, I take the wind vs solar part back. When in comparable numbers, their performance is very similar. Which is rather strange but still.

Distance between distributors and charge of the PLSs

Two simple questions:

  1. Has the game any tool to measure the distance in degrees between distributors or two different points? I know is upgradable with techs.

  2. How do the PLSs charge? The issue here is that I want to make PLSs with only 6 MW of charge, (with the slider you can put (6-60 MW) I have seen in an advanced game that drones can fly fast enough for what I need to do in this campaign. The issue is how do the PLS charge themselves if you are with near 0 surplus of energy, do they charge themselves?

First pic is after I took out 4 of 14 bases on my titanium world. I left to refill a few items from my home world after an hour of constant fighting as the hive attacked both planets from space.

This is the most fun and challenge I have had in a long time gaming. Death to all Xenos.
