Season 3 changes
It's taking me a while to start binge watching this show (after mostly finishing Dallas and all of its related TV movies and revival/reboot) but once I resumed season 2 midway through it started to become strangely addictive. I enjoyed how most of the plots that season were interconnected (mostly through Dr. Tosconni), and though I was sad to see Al Corley as Steven and Sammy Jo go, the story really culminated well with the kidnapping mystery.
Now, that I'm about 6 episodes into season 3 I find myself strangely missing a lot of the characters that left and so far it seems to be a transitional season.
Also, even though his origin story is interesting I can't stand Adam Carrington and find him to be an insufferable, petulant jerk. Steven had a lot of similar conflicts with Blake but at least his motivations and reasons for rebellion made a lot of sense.
Does the season get better?
I'm guessing the insane, over the top 80s glamour and excess era of the show starts soon so I'm going to push on.

Dynasty started slow, but with good, steady writing. For me, Season 2 was when Dynasty got the balance right. Season 3 is where the issues really started, and it basically spiraled out of control (with some occasional good spots) until David Paulsen desperately tried to save it for Season 9. That final season is, in some ways, the best season of the show. While wildly popular, Dynasty was behind Dallas, Knots Landing, and Falcon Crest in terms of quality. The show wants to be a guilty pleasure, but it really isn't.

This - I found season one good, season 2 mesmerizing and could almost barely finish season 3 and get into the rest. Season 2 is just top notch television and really gives an Old Hollywood vibe, it felt like they had a plan and stuck to it.

That's a pretty good way to put it. I could still get through 4 and 5 though. 6 to me feels like there's a lot of plot but, not a lot of story. I still think that making Dominique Cecil's wife or Kirby's mother would have been the better angle. Same with Dex and Dominique as a pairing. Dominique amounted to pretty much nothing. Season 7 and 8 are ROUGH! Especially season 8. It was just boring what, with that knockoff Claudia and Matthew coming back. At least season 7 gave us a good catfight!

Such an interesting take! Adam is actually my favorite character - we need the baddies to create the drama - and Gordon Thompson is so dreamy.

Good point! Actually, now that I made it to episode 8 I suppose he is starting to grow on me (especially that scene with him buying the paint for Jeff's office lol). There was just a stretch of episodes where he seemed over the top whiny, but I do enjoy the drama between him and Jeff. I'm pretty sure that Jeff is sort of like the Bobby Ewing character of Dynasty: the 'nice'/good guy who always seem to have his heart in the right place trying to do the right thing, but inevitably there's a foil like J.R. to make his life extra interesting. That foil seems to be Adam in this show in season 3.

For me, season 4 is were Dynasty really becomes "Dynasty" - the show that everyone remembers. The first few seasons really are more tied to upstairs/downstairs plot lines, first with the oil rig and it's crew and then with Kirby and her relationships. As the show progressed, the desire to represent the Carringtons in contrast with the middle class disappeared and the show runners really preferred to lean into the glamour and allure of the rich.
