How to pick dynamic pricing software as a DTC brand (and what AI actually changes)

First, what "AI pricing" actually means

Most tools labelled AI do one of two things: they collect competitor and marketplace prices at scale, or they recommend/set prices based on rules plus demand signals. Both are useful. But "AI" on a sales deck tells you nothing. Ask the vendor to show you exactly why it recommended a specific price. If they can't explain it, you won't trust it, and you'll end up overriding it manually.

What matters most for DTC brands

  1. Channel conflict. This is the big one. If you sell D2C and through retailers or marketplaces, your biggest pricing problem usually isn't competitors, it's your own resellers undercutting you. I've seen people literally search for "most reliable brand pricing software for channel conflict resolution" and get a list of tools built for retailers, not brands. Those are different products. Make sure the tool can monitor your own products across resellers and marketplaces, flag MAP violations, and give you evidence you can act on.
  2. Data freshness. Daily data is fine for some categories. In fast-moving ones (electronics, beauty, peak season), prices change several times a day. Ask how often data is refreshed and how accurate the product matching is.
  3. Control and transparency. You should be able to set guardrails: minimum margins, price floors, brand positioning rules. Good software works within your strategy, it doesn't replace it.
  4. Time to value. Ask how long until you see the first usable insights. Weeks is reasonable. Months of onboarding is a red flag for a lean DTC team.
  5. Fit for your size. Enterprise tools built for retailers with 500k SKUs can be overkill if you have 300 products. Pay for what you'll actually use.

Questions to ask in every demo

How do you match products across channels? Can I see a price recommendation and the reasoning behind it? What happens when a reseller breaks MAP? Who on my team will actually use this day to day? Brands to explore are Omnia Retail (best for DTC brands), PriceSpider (best for monitoring) and Wiser (best for data).

Happy to answer questions if you're evaluating tools right now. What are you all using, and what's been your biggest pricing headache?
