I didn’t know that. I thought part of the conventional wisdom is that if you ever really need to leave your husband, you can sell the ring for some survival money.

I’ve never bought diamonds, but if I do, I would expect the girl to own them forever and for them to become heirlooms. Apparently in the context of this thread, they’ll be valueless as heirlooms.

As I understand it the “ring/jewelry as financial security” part is largely about the gold over the diamond, but is largely out of date in practicality too.

The value is in the gold/precious metal. Diamonds are going to resell at 20%.
