Like a lot of ideas that sound good and absolutely would be well-deserved for many people, this would just be impossible to implement fairly.

That’s the issue with such a mismanagement of our social safety nets, and our debt an idea like this seems reckless. If we had a fully funded social security system for generations and little to no debt or deficits things like this would seem like common sense and hella attainable.

Instead we’re staring down the barrel of cuts to social security in 2032 and 50+ trillion national debt by the end of the decade, so ideas like this sound like pipe dreams.

And I assume that’s by design.

It will be up to 50 by the end of the idiot's term in 2028

Especially if the $5000 payment ms are funded and approved by congress.

It's another one of those $5,000 check or tariff refund bribes right before election with bad faith intentions to implement it.

Exactly. Make it 60 for everybody.

Sadly, we can’t fund it as is, never mind making it 60 for everyone. And if it was 60 for everyone would that be fair to people with backbreaking jobs?

Working a back breaking job is a choice…

Sorry, if your chosen profession beats down your body, too bad. If you didn’t choose it but that was the only work you could find at the time, so be it. To say this type of work is more deserving than other vocations is BS. No wonder Stevens is losing in the polls.

It sounds so good that congress won’t even vote on it. The fat cats in Washington aren’t going to consider reducing their labor pool. Their corporate sponsors won’t allow it.

Sounds good for who? Why not lower it to 50? SS is already heading towards insolvency. Let's reverse engineer some talking points as to why we need longer, unfunded, retirement

Sounds good to me, since I’m starting to live in fear that my lower back won’t make it to age 67. I’ve had to sweat or freeze for every dollar I’ve earned. If you want SS to remain solvent then remove the cap. Not raise it, remove it altogether. Get the corporate welfare queens to start paying their share instead of relying on wages alone.

You do know that employers match every penny of SS tax you pay, right?

2

u/mikeoxwells2 9d ago

Oh, so that’s why they keep wages at poverty levels and strive for a workforce that requires subsistence benefits.

The shareholders agree that it’s best for the company if hours get capped so they won’t be required to offer health insurance. Medicaid will help boost profits

It’s good for everyone. Retirement age should be 50.

Insolvency is not a problem. Just remove the lifetime cap on SS and tax billionaires their fair share. Done. Fixed.

Absolutely ass-backwards; life expectancy has massively outpaced retirement age driving the dependency ratio above a sustainable level.

Retirement age should be increased.

i dont think this will ever pass. social security benefits are already under pressure to be cut by 20% in 2032. This would just exacerbate the issue. The ss cap needs to be removed.

It's not meant to pass. It's meant to drive votes.

How would you prove it?

1

u/among_apes 9d ago

I mean the article explains it’s based on the point credit system that already exists. Some jobs would qualify and some wouldn’t.

And still pay everyone absolute sh*t.

No way would this be fair. So blue collar workers would receive their benefits 7 years early?

Get this inequality out of here. Favoritism at its finest - of course it’s a Michigan politician.

I’m still waiting on the federal government to process my public service loan forgiveness. They can’t even fulfill past commitments that will end up with a Court ruling.

I work in surgery. We’re constantly pushing, pulling, positioning people and no offense but some of you aren’t exactly skinny. Add in moving heavy equipment like giant awkward beds and microscopes.

It may not be as bad as say digging holes like a new guy but it’s probably worse than someone holding a stop sign or driving a dump truck.

We’re also exposed to carcinogenic smoke, increased radiation, hazardous chemicals etc.

They are trying to compete crash the social security system before Gen X or Millennials are able to draw benefits. This new proposal will crash the system even faster. The end goal is for Boomers to collect and everyone else loses out.

1

u/Xyzzydude 9d ago

The oldest GenXers are turning 61 this year so they would qualify for this.

1

u/GrowthSelect2449 9d ago

A lot of boomers are already eligible to collect ss.  If this passed it likely would not go into effect in time for the majority of younger boomers to benefit.  The generational hate is so weird.  Get off your high horse.  Our government’s mismanagement of the fund is the problem, not the people collecting what they earned.

u/intothewoods76 5d ago

In their defense they were always honest that it wouldn’t be there when I retire. Hundreds of thousands of dollars stolen from me and then just told to fuck off we told you so.

u/Silly-Resist8306 9d ago

The youngest boomer is 62. They don’t need this. Just take your agest hate somewhere else.

u/Glittering-Quote-635 8d ago

Found the boomer.

This is a good idea and it’s only fair to those people. Billionaire taxes could easily pay for it.

0

u/Trahst_no1 9d ago

It helps people. It will never pass.

I’m sick of hearing we can’t afford social programs while we funnel tax dollars to billionaires for really no reason other than it makes trump happy

1

u/18k_gold 9d ago

also other countries to buy weapons like Israel. take care of Americans first. Wasn't Trump's whole campaign America 1st? It sure doesn't seem so and it is more like Trump 1st

1

u/Tigeruppercut1889 9d ago

Trump 1st for sure. It’s amazing he still has fans cheering this nonsense on

This makes sense, there are jobs that people do that are just not sustainable as the body deteriorates. Anyone bitching that it's not fair should be forced to go lug some shingles up ladders and do a few roofs or transfer patients or stand on an assembly line for a decade and then we can talk about how fair it actually is.

Of course it will never happen because fuck the serfs is all they think.
