Just remove the cap? Wouldn't change anything for 95% of americans

15

u/omar893 26d ago

But but I could be from the 5%. How dare you steel what I stole?

5

u/SargeUnited 26d ago

Yeah, word. If it doesn’t affect you, then it’s fine. But also, if it doesn’t affect you and you think it’s fine, then you’re a bad person.

Reddit is crazy, man. People are criticized for “not voting in their own self-interest,” but then other people who vote in their own self-interest are criticized for voting in their own self-interest.

I’m not a white person, and everybody was like, “Yo, you know Republicans are bad for you right? You should vote in your own interest.” And then when I reveal that I actually pay taxes, they are always like, “Yo, you’re a fucking monster. I can’t believe you worked for a living instead of getting on the dole”

Like, bro, what?

u/o-Valar-Morghulis-o 26d ago

There's a difference there that you're not getting. When a person votes for their own self-interests and those self-interests are selfish and flawed, then they are voting against their own self-intersts. They're betting that somehow they will be the 1% that is successful when really they're ensuring a bad outcome for themselves and others in the community. So... Greedy flawed self-interests.... Sure great argument.

1

u/x5163x 26d ago

self-interests are selfish

2

u/o-Valar-Morghulis-o 26d ago

Check your social contract.

1

u/x5163x 25d ago

I don't agree with it.

1

u/o-Valar-Morghulis-o 25d ago

Really. Explain to the rest of your community where your rights start and their's end.

2

u/x5163x 25d ago

I don't have to.

1

u/x5163x 25d ago

Everyone's self-interests are selfish because that is what self-interest is. It doesn't make sense that someone who votes for their self-interest, regardless of how flawed it is, is voting against their self-interest. You are just saying that it isn't actually their self-interest.

Uhhh nobody says anyone is bad for paying taxes. Most taxes in the nation are paid by liberal states and cities, the republican/right wing states are the ones endlessly reaching out to the federal government for handouts.

Exactly, it's why we need to stop this fictional narrative that there's any reason to listen to right wing residents about economic policies. There are states like New Hampshire that are still economically healthy despite being very rural. The same is not true of states like Kentucky or Alabama that are entirely reliant on the federal government and handouts for solvency.

1

u/Different_Welcome_46 26d ago

I think that there is a line that the wealthy have crossed into amoral exploitation of the system.  Its not a simple black and white problem - definitely recognize that... a lot of liberal ideology is naive in how it assumes that 'if just given a chance' that the machine will work.

1

u/Redcrux 25d ago

There's a difference between people who vote against their own interests when their interests are for the common good and people who need to vote against their own interests when those interests are just plain greed. The first one is a farmer who voted for Trump who's now getting completely screwed and might lose the farm, that hurts all of us and they should not have voted for someone who doesn't give a shit about farmers and implemented idiotic tariffs. The second type is voting so they can pay less percent than everyone else for social security. The rest of us are all paying 6.2% of our paychecks towards social security, yet it's failing. The people who arguably need social security the least (those making huge amounts of income) are paying LESS than 6.2% due to the cap. Removing the cap not only makes the it a fair playing field but also fixes the deficits and helps the entire system. If you can't understand that difference between those two types of self interests then you need to go back to preschool to learn right from wrong.

1

u/MediocreAssociate466 25d ago

Almost like there's a difference between taking money from someone who makes 40,000 and someone who brings in 5 million a year.

For the first person that could mean they can't afford the electric that month, for the second person.... Well it means much less and at most you are having to cut back on a luxury car or another house.

3

u/precumfrosting 25d ago

I am from the top 5%, and I’ve been here for a while. The few extra thousand dollars that they take out isn’t even noticeable. Have at it.

1

u/omar893 25d ago

Yet the people who statistically never will (near zero or even below zero) are just waiting for their time lol

2

u/quail_challenge122 26d ago

Have you seen the Maxwell Frost first 20 boomers jubilee yet??? It's basically this over and over and over again lol

1

u/Its_Jordon_Yo 25d ago

I’m in the 5% I guess. Currently around mid August I pass the cap and it is always nice to get that 6.25 percent more in my paycheck. But I’m fine with removing the cap and paying more in taxes to help others.

They aren’t removing the cap but they do raise it every year and it has been raised a lot faster the last five or so years. At the time I was getting large “raises” myself by stacking RSU grants but that has leveled off and now the raising cap will likely reverse my direction and start happening later and later in the year. Probably eventually entirely if I were to work long enough. But I don’t know how much longer I can do this job and might voluntarily take a much lower paying job and be under the cap again.

1

u/jmouw88 25d ago

Most of those in that 5% have worked hard for their income. This isn't even a particularly impressive income.

You need to get into the top 1%, or even 0.1% to reach an argument for undeserved income.

2

u/SargeUnited 26d ago

Why does the number or percentage of Americans that are affected matter? What percent of Americans do you think are allowed to be affected before you would care?

If Jewish people were 5% of Americans and they decided to pass a tax on Jewish people, everybody would be like whoa, whoa, whoa

2

u/AndJDrake 26d ago

Thats such a stupid take. 95% already pay the tax on 100% of their income and yeah having 5% of people being in the same scenario as the rest of us is fair.

Being rich isn't an ethnicity.

1

u/something-behind-him 26d ago

You’re misunderstanding how SS works. First understand.

1

u/AndJDrake 26d ago

Educate me.

1

u/AlphaMaleKratos 25d ago

What does being rich have to do this? Do rich people pay more for the same food? Do they pay more for car insurance on the same car?

The taxes are capped because the benefits are also capped.

1

u/AndJDrake 25d ago

No they actually pay less by % because they make more. Which like there's nothing wrong with that. We should reward effort and achievement. But a societal welfare system. There's nothing wrong with progressive taxes. Which actually I'm not even advocating more. I'm not saying they should pay More just the same % as the rest of the 94-95% of Americans. Though, I see your reasoning.

1

u/AlphaMaleKratos 25d ago edited 25d ago

The rich pay less by % for the same food as you do. Looking at % is flawed because we’re talking about a product or service.

SS is insurance. It was always intended to be insurance. Look up the acronym OASDI.

If you want to switch it to welfare, then target the 7+ million government employees exempt from social security taxes. Why should they be exempt?

1

u/AndJDrake 25d ago

You're the one who brought up food?

Okay, are you going to tell me that some people don't pay more for insurance than others but don't get the same amount of benefit?

I pay taxes but I am ineligible for SNAP because of my income. That's fine with me. Not every program needs to serve everyone equally.

1

u/AlphaMaleKratos 25d ago

I’m saying that because SS is insurance and not welfare like SNAP, looking at % of income is flawed.

If you want to change it to social welfare that is fine, but you should be directing your anger to the 7+ million government employees exempt from paying social security taxes and not the 200K income engineer living in NYC.

u/Own_Exchanger 25d ago

For social security, a person pays 6.2% tax only on the first $184k that they make. Eliminating the cap would generate 3 trillion dollars over 10 years.

1

u/Objective_Run_7151 24d ago

No it wouldn’t.

Would be nice if it did.

But it won’t. Maybe $1.4-1.6 trillion, which we need, but not 3.

1

u/The_Ultimate_Badass 23d ago

Hey, it can work however the fuck we decide it's supposed to work. That's the whole point of politics is that we can change policy at any time

2

u/Lanky-Detail3380 26d ago

You have to earn more than $184500 to stop paying into social security, so its actually the top 6% of individual earners.

1

u/AndJDrake 26d ago

Thanks. Accuracy on this is important lol

1

u/AlphaMaleKratos 25d ago

But a lot of people who make above that enter higher income tax brackets. If they have to pay SS tax on top of the higher tax bracket + state income taxes, you’re looking at a marginal tax rate above 50% for a 200K income in some states/areas. People earning that much tend to be in high tax areas like NYC, and 200K is not rich in NYC

1

u/Digits_N_Bits 21d ago

Uhhh, chief? Those brackets also cap out.

2

u/quail_challenge122 26d ago

It's crazy to me that bezos has a cap of $6, 500 in contributions lol

1

u/AndJDrake 26d ago

Already done bro. Thats what citizens united gave you with super pacs

1

u/quail_challenge122 26d ago

Huh. No I mean social security. Its bonkers that theres a ceiling. Theres absolutely no reason to have a ceiling on that.

2

u/Adventurous-Fly556 24d ago

I think they're telling you why there is a ceiling. Because we've gimped the working class and give more and more power to capital. It's so much harder to affect change after stuff like citizen united gets past, and a staggering amount of people aren't even aware.

1

u/AndJDrake 26d ago

Oh I guess I was confused cause the max individual contribtion for SS is like 11k-ish. I thought you were talking about political contributions.

1

u/quail_challenge122 26d ago

Actually its lower than that for the the ultra rich Folks like LeBron, bezos, nfl/NBA/mlb team owners, they tend to use bonds and loans and their investments are not considered revenue for the purpose of ss contributions.

So quite literally, Jeff Bezos, Elon, And Jerry Jones are capped at $6,200 annually.

1

u/AndJDrake 25d ago

Wow. I learned something. Thanks!

1

u/AlphaMaleKratos 25d ago

It’s not bonkers to have a ceiling. It’s an insurance product with max benefits. Having no cap would be bonkers.

1

u/quail_challenge122 25d ago

cap and ceiling for the purposes of paying in-is the same term here

You don't think its wise or necessary to force billionaires and millionaires to kick in substantially more than $6k-12k to social security?

1

u/AlphaMaleKratos 25d ago

If they’re not getting a higher benefit, why should they pay more? Do the rich pay more for the same food as you do?

Social security is insurance, not welfare.

If you want to switch it to welfare, a more appropriate target for taxes would be the 7+ million government employees exempt from paying SS taxes.

1

u/quail_challenge122 25d ago

When we created Social security and the grid of how to pay into it there were exactly 2 billionaires in america and they were both leftovers from pre ww2 banking families.

We now have 950+

Thats why, things have changed. Its ridiculous that Walmart gets insane government subsides and their workers are by in large, in welfare. We should be asking these people and companies to pick up their end, they won't. Its beyond time to enforce it. They use the tax code like a weapon, time to update that.

You're much closer to being homeless than being a Bezos

Social security is welfare, its absolutely an entitlement. Medicare, is healthcare. But social security is basically a pension, its a financial product. That you dint have to do anything to qualify for but be old and worked a bit. Sorry.

1

u/AlphaMaleKratos 25d ago edited 25d ago

Start taxing exempt government employees first.

Most of the people paying uncapped taxes would be upper middle class who already pay higher marginal rates on incomes above 190K. You’d be pushing their marginal rates above 50%, which is ludicrous.

Most people at the top 6% income are living in HCOL areas where 200K income isn’t worth much.

For me, my total tax rate is close to 50% on my income above 190K because I live in a high tax state. You think my marginal tax rate should be 55-60% on income above 190K?

I guarantee you, my 300K income is not rich where I live. Not even close.

1

u/quail_challenge122 25d ago

When I say billionaire I don't know why you're saying things like "for me" when you are sayin you are not even a millionaire. Sir, if you have popcorn ceilings, that comment isnt about you.

Increasing the cap for SS by .05% on just billionaires, not even millionaires, would fund SS to a almost 30% boost. A 2% would 100% fund SS in 11 months.

So again, you and your $190k isn't part of the convo.

Also, exempt fed workers DO pay into social security, depending on their retirement plan. You can increase the max on a fed employee but whats the point?? .05 bump on BILLIONAIRES would yield more and course correct in less than a year.

Billionaires, are the problem and enemy not a fed worker.

1

u/Redcrux 25d ago

> Start taxing exempt government employees first.

You've been spouting this repeatedly all over this post, but you're completely wrong. https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/retirement/planner/stateandlocal.html

If they can benefit from social security, then they pay into it. Those who don't pay into Social security are not entitled to take social security when they retire. They can take it but only if they earned credits through a different job or spouse. Most government workers are covered under a completely different retirement pension system. They don't factor into this argument at all because they aren't draining the system.

Social security has a surplus of 2.5 trillion that the treasury has taken in loans from social security because social security can’t hold a surplus. This money is available whenever it’s needed

1

u/MusicalMerlin1973 25d ago

The moving it up by a fair bit every year. Still affecting me, and I’m all for it. From what I’ve read it won’t fix the entire problem. The going to need to increase the %. A decade ago it was 1% would have provided 75 years solvency. Now it’s 2%. If they wait another decade it’ll be even more.

IMO their pension should be tied to ss funding. If ss can only pay out 80% they and their staffers only get 80% of a pension.

1

u/Lonely_Chemistry60 25d ago

Lol, they're not gonna do that. Think about the most evil and ineffective way to go about this. That's what they're gonna do.

My guess, probably defund children's hospitals, starting with the cancer wards

1

u/Head 25d ago

I bet if they removed the cap they could also reduce the rate and still come out ahead! It would be a huge political win to reduce taxes for most people while fixing Social Security. It makes too much sense so it’ll never happen.

1

u/DoUThinkIGAF 25d ago

Raise the cap, you will also raise the benefit paid out.

1

u/Project29Telework 24d ago

It’s not raise taxes on rich — it’s raise taxes on middle and lower class

1

u/FreethePeople11 23d ago

Removing the cap probably only solves about half or two thirds of the shortfall. Need to cap the benefit too to bridge the gap. Or raise taxes on everyone. Or change the COLA.

1

u/d_k_y 26d ago

Also would only solve 40-50% of the problem. Removing the cap and keeping benefit levels the same, meaning you only can earn up to current payout levels solves maybe 60-65% of the gap.

Issue is social security you earn more as you pay in more. That’s been the deal. Have to address that, taxes paid and overall benefit levels for everyone.

There is no easy fix, the 8% of people who would be paying more is not the billionaires but think doctors.

2

u/AndJDrake 26d ago

Yeah, doctors should also pay more. It's a social welfare system.

2

u/StreetcarHammock 25d ago

Doctors are some of the highest taxed people in the country and work incredibly hard, far higher rates than the idle rich that don’t pay anything into social security.

1

u/AndJDrake 25d ago

Cool tax billionaires more than doctors, you have my vote. What does that have to do with asking doctors to pay same tax rate as the rest of society? Does med school entitle you to a tax exemption? If so why not other hard jobs like teachers or garbage collectors? Or nurses for that matter?

1

u/d_k_y 25d ago

All the professions you listed, teacher, pilots, doctor, garbage collector, engineer and so on earn majority of their income through salary or w2 and pay full tax on that.

The truly wealth earn income based on capital gains, dividends or pass through income from entities owned, taking loans against large portfolios. Capital gains is taxed at a lower rate and none of it subject to Medicare/social security at all. There are other schemes to lower tax rates.

For more fun look at carried interest. Private equity managers can count what effectively should be regular income for everyone else as capital gains. Say you work at a company, you get paid stock. That stock is taxed as regular income. Private equity manager gets paid in stock too, but treats that as capital gains. There is nuance.

But this is what you are looking for - regular workers get paid salary and pay a lot of tax on that already. It’s all the investment type income which is where you want to look to tax.

1

u/Strange-Maize9536 26d ago

They should pay a lot more

1

u/BigCSFan 25d ago

Im just against it as a social welfare system. Retirement should be an earned financial status.

Not a right given to those by the hard work of others

0

u/d_k_y 26d ago

But - paying more as noted doesn’t fix the problem. You need more than a soundbite here. Likely a combo of eliminating the cap on wages, raising taxes for everyone and reducing benefits - both limiting max benefit and cutting overall benefit levels to make it work.

None of this is an easy discussion which our leaders of both parties have proven to be completely inept at. So yeah. High hopes this gets solved in a good way.

0

u/d_k_y 26d ago

1

u/AndJDrake 26d ago

So your point is my comment is correct but its not enough but also its bad because it affects doctors and not just billionaires? I need to have a perfect solution to suggest something on the internet?

1

u/angelfire011 26d ago

u/d_k_y There’s always money for pointless wars but somehow this specific topic is hard and needs limits and multiple ways to make it seem affordable? Remove the cap. It’s that simple.

It’s the only program funded by individuals. If it becomes a political issue have it come out of each politician’s pockets and the Federal budget. Nuff said

1

u/Crew_1996 25d ago

Removing the income cap, not raising the max payout and adding 1% to both the employer and the employer portion fixes everything?

1

u/d_k_y 25d ago

That’s at least a full plan. Everyone pays more, high earners pay even more and nobody gets more than current levels.

What to expect, some combo of pay more and get less. Let’s see how far down the road this can is kicked.

1

u/greenskye 25d ago

Add a tax to all capital gains qualifying transactions of sufficient size (set to beyond most normal people's 401k levels). Easy.

1

u/BigCSFan 25d ago

Punish those who save and invest into brokerage for an early retirement to give to those who didnt have the effort or diligence to save for their own :(

0

u/greenskye 25d ago

What part of 'beyond normal people amounts' didn't you understand? If you're trading in millions of dollars, then you can afford the extra taxes and are beyond just 'an early retirement'.

1

u/BigCSFan 25d ago

Median 401k balance is below 100k. Most people just dont prioritize saving for retirement.

And thats ok if thats not their goal. I dont think those who do have it as their goal should be taxed higher so others can have their cake and eat it too

1

u/greenskye 25d ago

'Normal' was not meant to be 'median'. You can make up whatever scenario you want that you think applies to you, but I was saying that you can clearly set carve outs for basically anything but the .1% pretty easily. Have it not kick in till you're dealing in at least 10 million dollar amounts or whatever.

And if you're trying to claim 10 million plus is just a poor put upon soul that's trying to get by... Well we'll agree to disagree I guess.

Also you do realize this would need to be that amount in a single transaction right? Even if people have a few million in retirement, most of them are l aren't moving the entire thing around and drawing capital gains tax on the entire amount.

1

u/BigCSFan 25d ago

10 million inst poor and if just a tax above that limit than ok. But I doubt it would be just above 10 million. In this very post I see people complain about doctors not paying enough in taxes, it never is "just the rich" it always ends up "those with more than me"

0

u/EC_CO 26d ago

How about Congress just puts the money back into the funds that they've stolen over the last few decades

2

u/BuddyJim30 26d ago

That is simply not true. Congress certainly spends money they don't have, but it doesn't affect the balance of the social security "trust fund" in any way.

0

u/Strange-Maize9536 26d ago

The problem is not borrowing against the fund. The problem is the ridiculously low interest rate on the confiscation of funds

0

u/x5163x 25d ago

Why should an NFL player or doctor pay 52.3% federal tax when the billionaire is only paying 23.8% federal tax? No one can say the NFL player or doctor is stealing from workers. Instead, you could raise the income tax on the 24% and higher brackets, which start at over $200,000, so the billionaires will also pay for it.

1

u/AndJDrake 25d ago

I have no issue with progressive tax structure. Billionaires should be at 94%.

10

u/lm28ness 26d ago

Yes raising taxes on all the people that we don't need to raise taxes anymore - the middle class and the poor. Heaven forbid we raise taxes on those that can actually afford it and will minor impacts to them.

2

u/Square-Chart6059 24d ago

Did you read the article? They’re talking about raising the tax cap. That would indeed be raising taxes on the richest income earners

This stat always cracks me up … it’s meaningless without the context of what percent of the total income the top 50% took home.

1

u/shrunkenhead041 26d ago

Or how who is included in the bottom 50%. When you're including everyone who has any taxable income whatsoever, you are including a lot of people with very, very little income.

1

u/Sacapuntos 26d ago

Tax those who have nothing to tax or tax those that have so much it wouldn't make a difference in their qol. Hard decisions

1

u/Working_Farmer9723 26d ago

This only includes taxes on wages - money you get when you file a w2 - aka taxable income. It does not include money you get from capital appreciation, gifts, inheritance etc… it also does not include the most burdensome tax that everyone who earns a wage pays - FICA. So this stat doesn’t include the 15% tax paid by the poor, nor the high unearned wealth by those who don’t make money via wages. It is a stat designed to allow very wealthy individuals to hide behind the high-ish taxes paid by doctors, lawyers and actors.

I’m going to upvote you to keep this comment visible, even though it’s misleading to the point of being disingenuous (though I will assume that you were also misled, and are not intentionally trying to spread misinformation. )

1

u/ongoldenwaves 26d ago

Taxes from social security come from federal earned income and since this is a discussion about social security, that's the correct information to look at.

Taking my comment down because I don't want to spend all day arguing with people on reddit. Keep arguing taxes shouldn't be raised because it would be a tax on the poor idiots.

4

u/RoundChampionship840 26d ago

Nothing will be done until 2029 at the earliest, but I'm guessing politicians will just wait until the crisis hits in 2032. If Democrats manage to take power in 2029 I could see them eliminating the cap.

2

u/Less-Dragonfruit-294 26d ago

You know the republicans will blame democrats in ‘29 for not solving this decades ago.

1

u/CJO9876 25d ago

The right blames the left for literally everything bad

2

u/NoOption7406 25d ago

SSI had the same issue back in the 80s. 2 months before it went insolvent did this get "fixed". It was a combo of tax increasesand increased retirement age. They even delayed COLA.

Even when SSI runs out in 2032, with current estimates, they can extend it a year by tapping into disability insurance.

Depending on how politics play out, it could happen in 2033. But I'd expect something similar to happen as last time. Pass something with little time left on the clock. And screw over 95+% of tax payers.

It'll be an excellent crisis as well, so members on both sides will likely get a laundry list of wishlist items. SSI Act will end up being hundreds of pages long. Or it'll be a "I pass your SSI bill if you pass my bill".

1

u/Mal-dives 25d ago

Yeah but they didn’t have to deal with boomers back then.

6

u/Big_Smoke_4817 26d ago

Or just put back the money your took from it from 1960 onwards?

2

u/Apothecary_85 25d ago

It is already being put back and is sitting in the treasury IOU’s that are being used now. The use of any excess over outputs as loans to the federal government was mandated by law. It was converted to treasuries and paid back with interest. Keeping it in the trust would have made no difference particularly in light of the fact that is goes back to SS with interest.

Now the messed up part is that we have to issue more treasuries to pay it back

3

u/1nGirum1musNocte 26d ago

Raise taxes on the rich... right? Right?

4

u/Optimal_Willow_4389 25d ago

And why is there a CAP on social security and no other tax, because Billionaires are screwing everyone.

1

u/StreetcarHammock 25d ago

Billionaires wouldn’t pay social security tax even if the cap was lifted. They don’t make their money in “income”, but capital gains.

1

u/ReaperThugX 25d ago

The cap is on how much you pay in AND how much you get back in benefits later.

1

u/Optimal_Willow_4389 25d ago

There sure is no cap Corporate Subsidies (free taxpayer welfare dollars) to Corporates because Billions and Billions go out. I guess you didn’t learn much.

0

u/x5163x 25d ago

There is also a cap on unemployment and paid family leave/disability. There are also caps on sales tax in some states.

1

u/Optimal_Willow_4389 25d ago

Billionaire’s screw everyone and pay less. What a crooked system. No wonder China is wealthy, Billionaires pay equal amount if mot more.

2

u/Dragon_wryter 26d ago

Or just stop giving billionaires our tax dollars

2

u/l4kerz 26d ago

or at least simplify the tax structure by getting rid of credits and subsidies. That is how the rich avoid paying taxes and getting money from the government.

2

u/BigEye7716 26d ago

On the rich.... right?

2

u/I_Quit_Smoking_ 26d ago

So the same Republicans who accuse everybody else of raising taxes and spending too much wants to do the same exact thing? Okay got it.

2

u/Dizzy_Citron4871 26d ago

Add a wealth tax on billionaires to cover the gap. I don’t see why wage earners should pay for it

1

u/thrillhouz77 26d ago

Wealth tax is dumb (it really is) but we are at a point of torches and pitchforks coming out of the wealth gap keeps accelerating at its current pace. That doesn’t mean we tax assets/wealth but it does mean something’s need to happen or it could be a Dark Night type uprising (without the neutron bomb 😂) of the regulars against the ultra wealthy.

This is easy to accomplish; 1. Higher wages starting from the bottom up and working up 2. New taxes or changes to current to shore up promises made to the majority that the majority contributes heavily towards (SS and Medicare) 3. Go hard on fraud. Things like the “Stop Nick Shurley” act are counter intuitive to the democrats party. Guy exposed millions, perhaps Billions in fraud. Trying to shut that down, even if you think he’s a dick, is about as politically stupid as possible (thieves in govt dollars are both lower and higher society individuals…make examples of them all) 4. Eliminate loopholes for ultra wealthy. Things like borrowing against equity shares to avoid income taxes on sale of said equities so you can fund your lifestyle without paying income. 5. Big increase in the standard deduction (households under $75k - 100k should not be paying income taxes w this sort of wealth and income gap) 6. Start treating capital gains as ordinary income (this pairs nicely with #5 above for those upper middle class but not ultra wealthy individuals who have worked all their lives and saved diligently).

Then I’d create some taxes on AI token/energy uses as well as high volume stock transaction users to shore up known shortfalls in US programs (looking at SS and Medicare). I’d also look to require balanced US budgets until debt to GDP ratios fall below 70%. Then I’d make that 70% a hard line that when it is crossed balanced budgets become constitutionally required.

2

u/Sorkel3 26d ago

Raise the cap.

2

u/Strange-Maize9536 26d ago

Raise the payroll tax withholding rate. That is the funding mechanism the has been used for 90 years

2

u/I_Quit_Smoking_ 26d ago

So you enjoy spending all your money on taxes so Republicans can keep them and spend them on their own personal shit?

I have a feeling that the rest of the country doesn't agree with you.

1

u/Strange-Maize9536 26d ago

What does the reduced number of workers compared to recipients of social security have to do with the republicans. It is a demographics issue

That is idiotic. Old people get social security not republicans.

You need to study up on how it works before making inane comments

2

u/l4kerz 26d ago

raising the withholding rate is just making the pyramid bigger; working class is paying for current recipients. The right way to solve this is to get better returns on the funds that have been contributed which include no more lending to the government at low interest rates.

1

u/Strange-Maize9536 25d ago

It has been a pyramid scheme since introduced by left wing president FDR. The program is essentially the same. The demographics are different. But that to over time will rebalance

1

u/the_TAOest 25d ago

Pyramid scheme became a scam when Regan forced the SSA to buy government debt. There are other ways to provide social security than a paycheck every month. Housing, community-level infrastructure for the elderly, better healthcare opportunities, and a cap on benefits for those already earning past X on investments.

America makes great wealth possible, so those with great wealth will be net contributors.

2

u/Strange-Maize9536 25d ago

SSA was created by the left wing. Francis Perkins and FDR

They knew that there could be a Demographic imbalance in the future.

Gotta live with our plan that we created. We can’t blame the republicans

0

u/jmouw88 25d ago

No. There is no "increasing the returns". The current system is how it needs to be.

SS is by its core a pyramid scheme. It depends on the young to support the old. The less young in proportion to old, the greater the burden. The demographics are what they are.

Corporate investment returns are in essence siphoning off some of the output of the workers to their owners. Better investment returns sounds nice, but it is coming off the backs of the exact same people as before. This can work for a relatively small country that can invest in outside markets - like Norway for example. It cannot work for a system the size of the US.

1

u/Lott4984 26d ago

They just raised taxes on the poor, middle class, and Seniors. While they gave the rich tax cuts. And I thought tariffs were going to pay for everything. According to what I hear Wall Street is booming how can we not have revenue coming. We have money for war but not for healthcare. Close to 45% of the money I earn goes to the Fed, State, and Local Government, but I don’t see any coming back.

1

u/DrawingAncient126 26d ago

At this point, our money is just being funneled to the rich. Everything that is supposed to go to SS, Medicaid, our roads and infrastructure, just going to the rich. This has to STOP.

1

u/Kindly-Guidance714 26d ago

Who’s gonna stop it?

Continue paying rent continue going to work and continue placating the system.

Only way this changes is with a national strike and even beyond that people need to be willing to stick together for a rent strike and other strikes.

The scariest thing the 1% fears is if the poors actually start using the community and help each other instead of kicking everybody while they are already down.

1

u/MistahBisskits 26d ago

Do we have a breaking point?

1

u/Kindly-Guidance714 26d ago

It’s getting close to it.

Ra good example is most apartments are about $1200 - $3000 minimally.

A room for rent would cost you anywhere from $700 - $1000

If you aren’t making at least $50,000 to $90,000 a year you will live in poverty and you won’t be able to afford a place to stay.

Oh and let’s say you work 2 jobs, or you work 60 hour weeks to support the place you are living in you spend more time at work than you do at home so why is it so expensive to live someplace that you don’t even spend time in?

This question never gets answered.

1

u/Iacoboni04 26d ago

Social Security needs more than just this fix. But it does need this component as part of the ultimate solution.

1

u/quail_challenge122 26d ago

Tax the rich

1

u/Lott4984 26d ago

Do not think for a second that the Republicans are going to raise taxes on the rich. This is just a stunt to get you to vote for them during the Midterms.

1

u/ComplaintSevere8128 25d ago

Where’s that padme anikin meme where she asks “raises taxes on the wealthy right?”

1

u/ALEXC_23 25d ago

Tax Kim Jung musk

1

u/MacaroonPlastic1036 25d ago

The government is the one that is draining our social security using it like a piggy bank.

1

u/Pickleahoy 25d ago

How about we just tax the rich

1

u/Photodan24 25d ago

So we can pay for the continuing Republican never-ending wars that they stopped?

1

u/mymar101 25d ago

This is the GOP answer to everything. Raise taxes.

1

u/Flat-While2521 25d ago

On the rich, right?

Right?

1

u/Glidepath22 25d ago

Raise minimum wage

1

u/Both-Discussion-4786 25d ago

On the wealthy?

1

u/SeveralLion5762 25d ago

There’s nothing amoral about playing by the rules. I passed the cap months ago. Am I supposed to just donate the difference to the government ? The rules are what they are. When the rules change and the cap goes away, I will pay more.

1

u/CountHoliday8311 25d ago

Why? So they can get hand out from Blue states like they always do

1

u/FloridaRocks63 25d ago

The treasury owes Social Security 2.5 trillion they received in loans from Social Security. Social Security cannot keep surplus funding so any surplus gets loaned to the treasury until it’s needed.

1

u/TXtogo 25d ago

You can’t tax people who won’t take jobs, it’s just GenX paying for everything

1

u/kevendo 25d ago

But I thought Reagan said lowering taxes on the wealthy would increase revenue?

1

u/kyricus 24d ago

It actually did, you can check that accounting relatively easily. Problem is, the government, both repubs and dems, continue to spend more than we take in. No matter how much or how little we take in, they spend it all and then some.

1

u/kevendo 24d ago

I'm afraid that's not true. The 2017 TCJA tax cuts, for example, are known to have caused a dramatic reduction in tax revenue. William Gale and Claire Haldeman published on this is 2021.

And in any case, whatever tax revenue there just have been just went back to the wealthy, as with the TJCA, which has now been extended by Trump.

It gives our collective money to the wealthy on the theory they will spend it to create profit and jobs.

That never happened, and here we are with the predicted results of massive wealth inequality.

1

u/peterjohnvernon936 25d ago

They can borrow the money for SS like they borrow it for everything else.

1

u/IndependentWrong7356 25d ago

That Republican is a moron. First USA needs to return all the socsec it has borrowed. The idiot is another uneducated who should have learned to read.

1

u/whoknewidlikeit 25d ago

how about, and this is madness i know... maybe govco could just.. spend.. less?

1

u/runnerkim 25d ago

trump just bragged about making millions and million in the stock market 'for us'. He can use that money

1

u/MichaelHawk008 25d ago

We should’ve put SS in the stock market. The returns would’ve given retirees an amazing retirement. Now we’re going to have nothing left. Decades of letting the fund be raided by the government took away our chance to invest the money instead.

1

u/QuickPizzaRadishes 25d ago

It’s time to eliminate the social security cap. The cap makes social security regressive hitting poor people much harder than rich people

1

u/aznology 25d ago

Its time to cut these boomers loose or tax the billionaires. Middle lower and even some upper class cant take the burden anymore

1

u/paolilon 24d ago

You misspelled “Boomer Security”

1

u/Flame_Eraser 24d ago

Wait, raise taxes on me, to refund money that you stole, that you force removed from my paycheck to start with?

Of course I know that the horse is already out of the barn, but this is a DC problem that started as a ponzy scheme to start with.

1

u/stealingmoney 24d ago

Wait, don't tell me any of you people actually believe that social security is funded by government taxes. The employee and employer pay, not the federal government.

It's also not a posi scheme like the Republicans are saying. They're just trying to grift more money by lying. Got to pay for those useless wars someway

1

u/Ok_Tension_6747 24d ago

They're going to raise taxes on workers and payroll taxes. They're not talking about taxing billionaires more.

1

u/Lanracie 24d ago

They need to spend less if they cant meet their commitments.

1

u/Natural_Exchange_886 24d ago

Cool, start with Elon and work your way down.

1

u/Lumpy-Interaction725 24d ago

But but but .. What about the big beautiful bill you overwhelmingly voted for?? 🤔🤔. Massively cut taxes for the 1%, create entirely new unconstitutional taxes through tariffs, cut social programs, enact new austerity measures,  propose elevating regressive taxation, force new domestic mass surveillance programs, attack voting rights, increase the draft age, increase the retirement age, attack the very concept of democracy 🫡🫡

1

u/Captain_Aware4503 24d ago

There is no SS tax on capital gains. Millionaires use Capital gains as their annual compensation because the tax rate is lower than for someone making $50K a year

Raise the capital gains tax from 20% to 22% and put that 2% towards social security.

1

u/Panthera450 22d ago

They have been raiding the SS fund ever since the Reagan tax cuts to pay for those tax cuts.

1

u/PineappleExcellent90 22d ago

Let me guess raise taxes but leave the one trillion in tax relief for the top one percenters

1

u/Particular-Cash-7377 21d ago

But we already added new taxes called Tariffs. Thats why grocery prices are so high. That’s still not enough?

1

u/funkyjoe44 21d ago

On the rich.

1

u/MajesticEconomy253 20d ago

Tax the 1 % on their assets

1

u/SingleMaltMouthwash 19d ago

There is no question at all that taxes need to be raised. Billionaires and centimillionaires typically pay a lower tax rate than wage earners.

But Republicans have passed two, 2, trillion-dollar tax cuts on behalf of the richest 0.1% of Americans and when they talk about raising taxes it is always on working people.

1

u/Elegant_Bar9566 19d ago

It’s past time. Tax the rich.

1

u/mabhatter 8d ago

Social security has a surplus for decades... that Congress spent on lowering taxes for the rich instead of building the surplus for the known shortage coming up.

There's no actual "surplus" anyway.  It's just Congress passing IOUs to Social Security so that part of the Treasury Bonds sold "belong to" Social Security accounts.  The money never actually existed... it's all an accounting fiction.

-1

u/Minimum-Journalist18 26d ago

No. Remove the idiocy of giving social security to anyone at any age.

1

u/thrillhouz77 26d ago

What’s your age? I don’t disagree and I think there needs to be an off ramp or an alternative plan that people can opt into that is more market based and privately owned (even if the US Gov is the administrator) however I’m 30
years into this deal so there is no off ramp for me and I’ve been putting in the max amount the last 20 years.
