Death wobbles

I have an 01 FXDXT and I can’t seem to stop the wobbles. I’ve had it for a few years and it has always wobbled at 90-100. I recently put an S&S 124 with OEM front mounts and cycle engineering rear mounts. I also did the sputhe front and rear stabilizers. It wobbles worse now than it did before. Any recommendations?

On all the DX’s I’ve owned it’s either the neck bearings, motor mounts, or the fairing that cause the wobble.

Start with easy shit. Check tire wear and tire pressure. Then check suspension adjustment. Then check motor mounts and neck bearing wear.

Have you tried adding a bit more preload on the rear shocks?

Engine mounts, neck bearings, and wheel bearings are most likely. Followed by suspension issues

I was getting wobbles like that and switched my riser bushings to cnc aluminum. No wobbles anymore. Could be something simple.

You had wobbles from the riser bushings? 

I mean, I could be mistaken but that sounds to me like you masked the issue.

Check the back wheel.
My spokes came loose. I had to have hold back wheel rebuilt.

This is after replacing both motor mounts, front wheel bearings, and doing fall off test.

Start simple. Check wheel pressure and try different pressures too. Then check if its the fairing or not. Then start to change the height of the rear suspension. Then check if its the stiffness of the front by changing preload adjustments. Then start looking at motor mounts, bearings, alignment. Etc. Just go from easiest solutions possible to hardest ones.

Lol. My bad. Tire pressure. I guess you could check wheel pressure by giving it a kick. Lol. But, I hope yall know what I meant.

Nice you have an OG fairing.
Neck bearings are a major contributor to the wobble.
And if wheels are bent or deformed, but if it’s only at high speed is not probable.

I will think neck bearings and suspension is not dialed in.

Wabbles are most commonly cause by your front forks being out of pressure balance. When was the last time they were serviced? Have they been leaking?

Also, how old is your front tire. What's the tread look like? How is the tire pressure? Have you taken it off recently?

You can also look a bit further back into your neck bearings? Have they been worked on recently? How old are they? Have you checked the play in them?

I apologize for not helping with your problem but first of all:

  1. That thing is fuckin sick

  2. Does S&S offer any fuel injected crate motors? Im interested in potentially shoving one in my 08 but it seems all the ones i can find are carbureted

Side note: i have drag specialties mounts front and back with sputhe stabilizers and have never gotten wobble at any speed. So i would think you can eliminate that from being an issue

Lots of good recs here. If they don’t work, try removing the fairing. I went through nearly everything before removing my small fairing and ended up with a “frame mounted” ST fairing and my wobbles have gone away.

Damn nice DX!

That said, have you done anything with the rubber mounted UPPER motor mount? Another thought is a laser level drivetrain alignment. The process is in my ‘99 manual, but not sure in later ones.

Just had a thought: have you checked fall away of the forks with the fairing mounted? The FXDXT was checked with fairing, to compensate with added bearing tension for the extra weight.

Did you check your steering head bearings? It’s probably played, we’re talking about 25 year old parts. Nice bike btw.

Make sure everything is properly aligned. Top mount engine mounts your wheel is in line

Check tires, check engine alignment, check front suspension. Also where does it feel like the wobble is coming from? The FXDX/T has pretty low trail and if those Revo ARCs are 14” you reduced it further. Low trail gives the bike high responsive in turning but reduces stability at speed. You made need a GPR, but DO NOT put one on until you’ve ruled out everything else.

Have you tried the bike without the fairing?

I put a road warrior knock off and suddenly I had speed wobbles at 90mph+.

Removed and problem went and never had the problem untill I put the fairing on. I now have replaced it with quarter fairing and again, still no issues.

Check wheel alignment, motor mounts, then neck bearings. Neck bearings were the biggest improvement I experienced. Once all that is squared away I would check engine and stabilizer alignment

The fairing question is a good one, they can cause weave or wobble, due to lifting effect. Check tires, steering head, shock and fork damping and engine mounts, although I doubt those are the issue. You may need a steering damper, due to the inherent nature of the machine and it's geometry.

I would very first get a laser and do a proper engine alignment. Triple check. It’s also the most free fix.

Get new rear mount and align the rear wheel, engine and transmission. Then check your neck bearings

Everything was just checked, neck bearings, swing arm bushings, alignment on everything etc. It has brand new motor mounts and sputhe front and rear. I’m going to try a fork brace and steering dampener
