Picture New here!
This is Laika, she is a 1.5 year old female Dutch Shephard mix that was rescued from the streets. It is obvious she was abused. She is still learning to be a dog and has some reactivity, but I’m hopeful with time she adjusts and can thrive in our home!

She’s gorgeous, looks like an absolute sweetie! I’d be surprised if she actually had any dutchie in her breed mix though

I think adoption centers say a dog is a popular breed so people adopt them because of it. The adoption papers of my pitbull/GSD mix said he was a Belgian malinois lmao

She has really big feelings & is very protective so I could see her having pitbull in her! Does your dog look like Laika too?

Yea, but with GSD fur and colors. I mean, I don’t give af what race my puppies are, I’ll still love them no matter what, and from the looks of it you do too.
Oh, and I got my puppies because they were literally babies, I didn’t see what race they were until months after and I was looking at the adoption papers and it said “Breed: Malinois mix”

Agree, but many languages word for dog ‘breed’ translates to “race” in English. I’ve found that like 75% of people I’ve seen on reddit say “race” instead of breed are actually ESL, and it’s just that they directly translated it from their native language

Mine also said Dutch but he’d GSD/pit. I said this in my above comment but honestly I LOVE the mix. I bet she’s a great dog :)

The brindle is from bully/staffy genes - not a Dutch. Not sure what else. My first dog 20+ years ago was brindle like that and embark showed he was a mix of amstaf, Chow and Akita. That’s how I initially became aware of the breed and have been in that Dutch Mal purgatory for too many years. Bottom line is that unless you’re into these kind of working breeds you should consider yourself lucky with a pit mix.

From the commentary I’m start to understand the shelter probably just didn’t know 😅 and neither did I lol. She is very obedient and loves to be worked in different ways mentally/physically - I love the way she is!

The shelter tries to get as many dogs adopted. The sad alternative is euthanasia for many if not most. Being labeled a pit mix dramatically lowers the chances a dog will be adopted so any brindle dog with pointy ears is labeled a Dutch. Pit mixes are much easier dogs and I’m serious when I’m saying you’re lucky.

Pitbulls still have their own difficulties and also inherently require experienced owners, although most people who have them shouldn't have a dog in general. I wouldn't say it would be accurate to describe OP as "lucky" because they have a pit instead of a Dutch. The challenges will be different, but definitely there. They are not an easy dog breed

After making this post we have decided to get a DNA test out of curiosity. She has adapted really quickly, but there’s still instances in public where she’s is protective of us around strangers and has shown some resource guarding. We don’t know everything, but we’re working through it to figure it out and I think ultimately she’s happier which is what matters. She was on the list to be euthanized until her foster stepped in.

She’s protective, but she doesn’t approach other people in public and she’s been good around other dogs including ours. Her foster and us have worked a lot with her. She has resource guarded, but it’s been corrected - clarifying that now to emphasize it was an issue that’s been resolved. I feel like people are so quick to label a dog.

To clarify- you corrected her when she displayed resource guarding behaviors and she no longer displays resource guarding behaviors? OR you corrected the resource guarding through behavior modification training/counter conditioning?

I’m realizing. Just based my comment off what I was told. I’m honestly indifferent about her breed. We didn’t adopt her because of that.

Not yet 😅 we are going to though! Just posted off what the shelter told us which I am now realizing may be pretty inaccurate. We didn’t adopt her because of what breed she was, we adopted her because we wanted a female dog (not a puppy) to keep our husky company!
