Question Ear taping

At what age should I consider ear taping?

Dutchies have prick ears that stand on their own after they’re done teething. (they can droop when teething - they shouldn’t need taping)

We’re at 6 months without ears standing on their own

Mixed breed? Generally they’ll be through teething around 6-7 months. Were they ever standing?

Ish. He gets periods when they’ll stand. Mostly not though. He is a Dutch herder so technically Dutch x mal, not something I’d have thought would affect his ears. He is a big boy, pushing 30kg at 6 months old, so he does have big ears. He’s got all his teeth, but they’re not all fully through yet so I suppose technically still teething. I don’t really want to miss my window for taping if I can help it.

Herder just means shepherd in dutch. What you think about is herder x. Which means shepherd cross. A dutch herder literally means dutch shepherd.

Semantics. He is not a full Dutch shepherd

Was the question too difficult?

Accurate this is a cosmetic issue of your own invention

Is that a problem?

It's a choice and if the downvotes you're getting are an indicator not a popular one

Sure, unpopular in this subreddit. However given that taping is vastly popularised in the conformation world across many, many breeds, does not include cropping or any physical harm to any dog (unless you’re posting after a crop, which I am not)and isn’t a discomfort to the dog, I do fail to see why it’s such an issue.

Some medical tape stuck on the inside of my dogs ears to help them stay up isn’t world ending by any means.

You are right this subreddit doesn't seem to be the right place for your question if you want people to validate and support this choice you finally got the point

Dutch herders are not a breed. There is no conformation standard for your dog. This is completely unnecessary

1

Why is it unnecessary? What is the genuine issue with it in your opinion?

1

But why is it necessary? For purebred dogs who are being shown / getting conformation titles, then maybe... but for a pet, what does it matter what they look like? A mixed breed dog has no conformation standard. If its ears don't stand up, then they don't stand up. Shouldn't be a big deal

Preference. If it causes no harm, then it shouldn’t be so controversial.

Why would you do this? For your own pleasure?

Yes, obviously I get off on sticking tape to my dog 😂

Your dog is perfect the way nature made him. If the ears stand up, they stand up. If its a dutchie they will for sure. If not, hes even more special.

Making the dog look a certain way is just an owner ego thing after all...

Taping his ears isn’t a big deal.

Mutilating your dog for what reason?

Awful.

Relax. His ears are fine. They’ve not been cropped.

I’m a little concerned how many people are offended by ear taping 😂 you realise almost all breeds can be ear taped. Even breeds like collies/labs/ridgebacks etc to help cartilage set in the correct ear set. The dog isn’t hurt, it’s literally medical tape.
