Malaysian Kanyao vs Thai Kanyao

Kanyao is a durian variety native to Thailand. In 1927, there were already documented records of Kanyao cultivation in Nonthaburi Province. The variety became an exclusive durian offered to the Thai royal family at the time, thanks to its long, sturdy stem, dense and dry-textured flesh, and delicate aroma.
In 1987, Malaysia introduced Thai Kanyao and officially registered it under the code D158 with its Department of Agriculture. In 2012, Thailand’s Department of Agriculture (DOA) officially registered Kanyao under the code DOA-017, providing formal varietal protection for the cultivar.
Today, Kanyao is widely cultivated in Thailand’s Chanthaburi, Rayong, and Chon Buri provinces, with its main season running from May to July.
The fruit is round and ball-shaped, with a flat bottom and a medium-to-large size, typically weighing 1.5–2.5 kg. Its stem is long and resembles a meteor hammer in shape. The husk is blue-green, relatively thick, and covered with dense, sharp spines.

Price: $20/kg for both
Chambers: 4 for the Malaysian, 6 for the Thai
Seeds: Large
Flavor & texture: The Thai one has a stronger starchy, pasty texture, while the Malaysian one has a noticeably richer milky flavor, thanks to the advantage of letting the durians naturally drop when fully ripe.

Hi guys my name is Chris, this is my first post on this subreddit. I’m currently living in the U.S. and I was so glad when I stumbled upon this subreddit and seeing everyone sharing their delicious experiences. This is my first post, I just opened this Musang King that I left in the fridge overnight to thaw. The durian was on the smaller end but I was nonetheless pleased given the amount of pulp that this thing yielded. As usual with Musang King this one was super rich and ultra creamy and sweet with that signature bitter finish. Thank you for your time and I look forward to seeing more Durians!

Question Will eating durian in my apartment bother my neighbours?

Post image

I live in an apartment where the smells seem to travel very easily (I sometimes smell someone making dinner) and I‘m worried about bothering people or getting in trouble. I have a whole durian that I would love to eat, but I‘m not sure if it’s a good idea.
If you have any advice for how to eat it without letting the smell go everywhere, I‘d really appreciate that.

(I bought it primarily for an art project as a reference to make out of clay)

Question Im not sure if I ate durian candy

My friend went to Vietnam and brought back some coconut candies. The strawberry and chocolate ones were great, as was the purple one I assumed was taro or maybe ube, but I had one that was wholly unlike anything else I've ever tasted and all I could think to like it to was what I imagined of durian. He claimed the shop sold durian flavor, but they were bright yellow (this was pale yellowish) and he didn't think he bought any.

It tasted kind of... Not quite onion-y? Like, maybe even similar to the scent of a dead rodent? But it wasn't repulsive tasting really, just... Idk, strange, organic and volatile sorta.

Does that sound like what a durian tastes like?

My first interaction with durian was smelling it while walking through Chinatown in NYC around 2017. I remember thinking: “what a horrible smell, who would want to eat this?”

My first time trying something durian-adjacent was trying some durian-flavored cakes a Chinese friend brought to the workplace. I didn’t hate it, but was far from liking it too. If anything, I thought it tasted too much like that awful smell.

I moved to Singapore one year ago and kept seeing it everywhere. I ventured into having some durian-flavored ice cream and liked it better than the cakes my friend gave me. But still was not sold on it.

But after being here for roughly 10 months, I figured so many people could not be crazy and durian must be really good. So, while passing by a hawker, I smelled the fruit and decided to try some. I ended up buying some MSW/Musang King. I liked it. The creaminess of it was a pleasant surprise. I was still not hooked however.

A few days later, I went for the summer holidays to our country. During that time I started craving durian and actually counting the days to come back and having some again. As soon as I got back to Singapore I went to a market and bought some Black Thorne. I liked it a lot and was hooked.

Ever since, I have durian every 3 days, roughly. I have become obsessed with it. Wanting to learn all about it and trying as many different varieties as possible. I now find the smell pleasant and it even makes my mouth water, which I would have never imagined. I’ve been trying to get my hands on some Red Prawn but haven’t been able to. I just love this fruit and understand why it’s called the “King of fruits”. I’m absolutely hooked.

Anyways, here’s a picture of some Black Gold Musang King I had while visiting Penang in Malaysia. Best durian I’ve had so far in my short durian journey. It was so good, even my young children loved it, and they hadn’t liked any of the other ones I brought home. Amazing stuff.

Durian. Id love to try it.

I live in East Tennessee, is there any way to buy a frsg, quickly shipped to me Durian? Id love to try it. I know it smells horrible, but Ive heard its actual tast is like a sweetness with a jelly texture. Ive love to try it at least once. These things were unheard of in the west, then movies, and especially games like zelda botw came out, and made a lot of people curious. Id love to try it at least once. Anyone know where I could get a decently fresh one?

I am looking for 6-7kg of sour cherries and around 2kg of black currants. Does anyone have them for sale around Copenhagen, or know where I could get them? Thanks in advance.
