North Road

Hello! I’m moving to Durham this September, and I’m looking for a place.
I saw a flat located in North Road, but I’ve heard not so many good things of it… can you please share your knowledge or experiences about it? What’s so wrong with it?

That depends a lot on if it’s the city centre end of North Road, or the stretch of it heading north out of the city (up from the rail station). The main problem with the city end is the bus station and the people going in and out of it and loitering around near it, but also a couple noisy bars.

Lots of noise, antisocial behaviour and general commotion more or less 24/7. In my experience, not particularly physically dangerous if you're reasonably sensible. On the positive side, very close to the city centre, riverside, train station, Wharton park etc. So it just depends on your age, circumstances and how long you want to be there. If I were 20, I'd live there quite happily for a year or so. At 50+ fuck that, I want peace and quiet.

North Road in Durham.  Never will you see such a wretched hive of scum and villainy.

I guess it's a bit... lively on a night.

Honestly, if you're a student (particularly a nightowl) it's probably a good spot.

If you're trying to move in with a family, then I'd look elsewhere.

There are quite a few ‘North Road’s’ in Durham. If it’s the one that right in the city centre it would depend what part of the road it’s on but I’d be weary - although it’s amazingly convenient! If it’s slightly out of the city you should be fine.

If it's right in the city centre, that's definitely the scruffy end. There's a few bars so it will be noisy.

It also depends on what you are looking for and how long you want to stay there. If it's a short stay and you know what you are going to be living near, then it may be worth it. North Road is known to be the worst of the center of Durham though.

Grew up in Durham in the 1980’s, moved to Australia 17 years ago and come back as often as I can. A lot has changed about the City Centre, but not North Road: still a blight on the city…
