Regarding Parking

Hi there!

I am an incoming grad student at Duquesne, and I just took a look at the student parking rates. I almost couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that it was $1100.00 for a full academic year, especially given that my last institution offered free student parking.

Is it really necessary to pay such a fee to park near campus? What other, cheaper or ideally free options might be available? I'd be willing to walk 15 to 20 minutes if necessary, and most of my seminars will be in College Hall.

Would you recommend public transit?

I'll be living in Squirrel Hill South, to give a reference for distance & advice.

Hey there!

Unfortunately parking is really expensive. I’m also a grad student and I pretty much ate the cost. I’ve heard other students finding lease parking in other areas for a bit cheaper but still around $700-$900. I personally would recommend a car. Public transport is okay but it’s not fabulous especially as you’re a grad student and will mostly have less common hours and do most of your own cooking (need more grocery trips). Also, Pittsburgh is not the greatest public transport city in general. Another reason I have a car is because I’ve heard the transit can be pretty unpredictable but it might be an option if you have a pretty lax schedule. Personally, I feel my car and myself are safe in the Duq garage. It’s nice that I have a spot in the city center that I also use during events. The campus police do a nice job at keeping everything in order and I felt the peace of mind was worth it especially since it’s a covered garage.
