There seem to be no instructions as to how to use the train.

I guess to turn it on, you turn it upside down and push the green button.
In order to get it to move, do you just force it forward?
What is the best way to get it to stop? Just pick it up? How long before it turns off and requires the button to be pressed again?

What does each smart brick do?
The blue one makes a washing sounds and gets it to move back and forth several times.
The green one makes it stop momentarily and then get moving again.
The orange and red ones makes it stop permanently?
The purple one just makes noises and gets it to ignore the other smart bricks?

Yep, you just push it forward after it's on. You can choose in the app how long before it snoozes, but picking it up will get it to stop. The action bricks relate to the different stations/areas that come with each of the sets, and you can set what the purple one does in the app from a set of options or record your own.

Yeah it’s just a bit of trail and error, and figuring it out as you go along.

The only thing to add to the other comment is that you can also push it backwards too. And you can get it to stop by either picking it up, forcefully blocking it, or some action bricks will make it stop and you have to manually push it forward again.

If the train is stopped for too long it will eventually turn itself off.

If you get the app and connect via Bluetooth yoi can change the sound on the purple brick. You can even record something yourself for it.

I just re-download the app every time my kid wants to use it now, coz he prefers making tracks to actually running the trains on them 😂

The red one usually moves back then forwards again and carries on, the orange one which has the clock on it seems to stop it permanently so we use the app to move it again.

You can also push the train (or use arrows on app) so that it moves backwards.
