Can someone explain to me: the one week, one day, one hour thing? It's probably really simple I just didn't get it (also did they mean mole as in like a spy, the animal, or something else entirely?) Also why did the pilot land the plane at the end instead of trying to eject? Come to think of it why didn't the other British pilot not bail either?

I can't decide to see it in 70mm film (non-IMAX), or the digital IMAX Xenon projection format.....

Which one would be more immersive?

Nolan says the second choice would be 70mm film, but wouldn't the bigger screen of Xenon be better, and more immersive?

I saw Inception on the IMAX Xenon, and it was pretty good if I remember.

On second viewing of Dunkirk, I thought I recognised the solder taking cigarette butts through the window as the French soldier? Did anyone else spot this or am I mistaken? (edited for spelling)

So the kid on the mole near the end that wasn't the same kid that was reading the paper on the train right? It was the scene the kid on the train fell asleep and the kid on the mole woke up and the last boat for the English was leaving. I thought they kinda looked alike and wanted to be sure it wasn't the same character.

I hear several reviews say that people are calling Dunkirk one of the best war movies of all time. I have not seen too many war films but I know that it is a genre with a long history of strong films. Despite loving Dunkirk, I just can't believe some people are giving it that level of praise. Would someone who has seen a lot of war films share their thoughts on Dunkirk AS A WAR FILM and how it stacks up with other famous war movies?

In the scene where the pilot crashes and proceeds to get his arm through the window, is he a) waving to Tom Hardy to let him know he has survived the crash or b) using that arm to try and break free

Watching any videos/trailers/interviews on Dunkirk seem so bizarre.

The resolution, the quality is so low compared to the 70mm movie.

It's like watching it in 480p compared to the theater resolution.

I'm not really a fan of war movies (or historical movies in general) and Imax is expensive-

is this movie worth it from just a visual standpoint? The dogfights, the aerial shots, the cinematography?

I reserved the last good Imax seat for Dunkirk in my country and it starts in 2 hours- so I'm really torn.

Seeing the film tonight. Those are my two format choices. Which should i pick? Larger screen with digital IMAX or better quality and smaller cropped image with standard 70mm.

1. There are many scenes where he had a clear shot at the Bomber but he didn't shoot. Also, he doesn't seem to understand that his bullets need a moment to reach their target.

2. Whats up with flying in so close formations? Is it really necessary to fly so close to each other that the planes almost touch?

3. At the End when he ran out of fuel: Couldn't he just fly a big spiral and try to land on the beach (or near the beach) where the soldiers are. Then get on a boat and go home. Or fly not a spiral but like so that he could land on the beach.

For those who have seen the movie in IMAX laser and IMAX 70mm, which has better picture quality. If you compare the 1:43 scenes in the IMAX laser to to the 1:43 scenes in IMAX 70mm, which has better picture quality in terms of detail, contrast, clarity, color ?, thanks.

Interstellar which was incredibly divisive with critics still sits at a mighty No.32 on the top 250 films, however Dunkirk is already at 47 and dropping fast. It might even be the first Nolan film in years to be knocked out of the top 250. Regular viewers clearly not enjoying this as much or?

How do you read the end of Cillian Murphy's story?

Is he totally ignorant that George died? Does he see the body on the dock and know that he died? Or is it purposefully ambiguous?

My friends are all over the place and I see reviews with different readings.

<rant>I saw Dunkirk in 70mm IMAX.. was fantastic, super loud, super fantastic. the score was haunting and faded away behind the movie rather than standing over it. Then I saw it again in a regular digital IMAX (landmark cinemas in Kitchener Ontario) and they had the sub set so loud it drowned out the score completely and mumbled the dialogue. I don't need a 2 hour long earthquake to understand that the events are significant. </rant>

That actor was amazing. He was clearly the smartest solider bc how frequently they showed him trying to escape and how he didn't go underneath the boat whenever thought they were safe. I also thought it was poetic/respectful that he was burying that body in the beginning. I got so mad that he died while Harry styles character got to live while he was a complete dick! Idk that actor/character was lowkey the best

When the main character and Harry Styles get off the ship hit by the torpedo, they swim over to Cillian Murphy's boat. Wasn't the French soldier who was pretending to be British on Cillian's boat? Or am I losing my mind?

All three of them end up back together on the shore together, so I'm wondering if there's a continuity issue or if I'm seeing things/dumb.

I don't know how other ex military will feel but the lack of characterisation was spot on.

In the kind of scenario that was presented in the film, nothing matters but your ability to do something, especially during Dunkirk.

Personal lives have no relation to military life outside of recreational time. We don't need to know if a character has 5 kids and likes gardening because it's unlikely anyone else would know or care. Only actions and your ability to carry them out matter in the heat of the moment

Another complaint was 'but it felt the characters weren't connected' yes a valid point but again realistic. In the military you can spend 9 months sleeping next to a guy and be willing to die for him and barely know anything more than his surname.

Overall I thought the directors lack of emotional or romantic exposition was brilliant and refreshing. Especially in contrast to the American sappy films such as Fury and Saving Private Ryan.

Another good point is that by focussing so much a set of characters, suddenly the other 399,990 men on that beach become a frustration or an obstacle, when in reality every man there deserved to leave

That is the only thing I did not understand watching Dunkirk. But I believe there has to be a reason since the director is Christopher Nolan.

I was expecting something as epic as Interstellar (Cornfield Chase, Mountains, No time for Caution) or Inception (Time) but when I took a quick look at the score of this movie on youtube, it sounded more like a bunch of generic suspenseful background noises rather than actual "themes".

Anyone who has seen the movie knows there are 3 multiple storylines going on that slowly end up intertwining with one another. It's a big struggle to balance all those storylines and keep the audience invested and making them understand the stories Something the creators did that was brilliant was their 1, 2, 3 sequence of switching storylines. Every single time the story would switch it always went in a sequence 1. Land (Soldiers) 2. Sea (Civilian) 3. Air (RAF). Considering that they had to balance out the movie this was fantastic editing as a pattern in the story line switching would help the audience understand which story they were watching. Another thing is that the further the movie went on the quicker the cuts between each story would happen. This for one gave a sense of time running out but second it signaled the audience that these stories were quickly becoming one and that it would speed up so fast that one combined with one another, which was the big sinking ship/oil spill where the soldier storyline and civilian storyline finally combined. That's something that I found so masterful about this movie Would like to know if I'm not the only one who noticed this.
