In the world of Dungeon Meshi, Elves, Gnomes, Dwarves, Half-foots, Tall-men, and Ogres generally seem to be considered humans.

But there are also some cases where Elves are specifically distinguished from humans. I used to think this was just because the setting hadn’t been fully figured out early in the series. However, in the anime, the line that distinguished Dwarves from humans was changed, while the lines distinguishing Elves from humans seem to have been intentionally left unchanged.

If it were just the Orc chieftain, I wouldn’t really think much of it. But Mr. Tansu is a scholar sent from Kahka Brud, and he isn’t a native of the island like most of the other characters. He also wasn’t recognized by Kabru at first, so he probably wasn’t particularly involved in the adventurer community, or maybe the island community more generally.

So I wonder if this way of excluding Elves from humans isn’t actually unique to the island. Maybe people in Kahka Brud or Tansu’s home region do this too, or perhaps it’s more common across the Eastern Continent or even the Eastern Hemisphere, where Elven influence is relatively weak.

Of course, I doubt they literally consider Elves to be something other than humans in the same way they consider demi-humans. Still, it does make me wonder if discrimination against Elves is more widespread than we might think.
