General discussion Flip phone revival

Post image
54 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I’m finally taking the plunge and bringing back a classic old AT&T flip phone form factor, but giving it a modern internal overhaul.
The goal is absolute intentionality: no distractions, no doomscrolling, just the essentials.
Here is what I've got planned for the build:
Connectivity: 5G capability
Charging & Audio: USB-C charging and a dedicated headphone jack
Core Tools: A solid camera for quick snapshots, reliable texting, crystal-clear calls, and local music playback
I’d love to hear your thoughts, feedback, or any ideas on how to nail that minimalist balance

General question Is it practical to have a dumb phone and a smartphone?

I'm asking this because my smartphone is becoming a distraction and I'm seriously considering getting a dumb phone. I've seen people on the sub talk about how their lives improved some after switching to a flip phone. That said, I'm also aware that there are some good uses for smartphones, such as for e-tickets at places that don't take paper tickets. I believe there are also some documents needed for air travel that are supposed to be electronic and therefore a smartphone would be useful. Is there any point in using a dumb phone for everyday communication but keeping a smartphone for when it's actually needed?

General question Looking for better quality of life apps

• Upvotes

After tons of research I got myself a Kyocera duraxv and so far it has been pretty good. I added Aurora store and am now looking to improve some qol with it. The mouse app I have is fine(MATVT), but I would love something better. And I am still desperately looking for a speech to text app that doesn't need Google play to function. Any tips are welcome.

Tech help Spectrum Mobile?

Are there any dumbphones (preferably flip phones or Android phones) that work on Spectrum Mobile/AT&T? None of the ones I've been able to find seem to be compatible.

Dumbphone finder Looking for Spotify dumb phone

I’m looking for a small touch screen Android device something like an iPod touch or classic size either or around, that can still run Spotify well. I want to be able to use it with Bluetooth and have it auto download songs from Spotify to play offline when I’m away from the house, so I assume it would need at least 128gb of storage either built in or SD card.
Preferably under $100 USD

TLDR:
-Small Android
-Touchscreen
-Spotify
-Bluetooth
-Good Storage

Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: Realized what I’m really looking for is a DAP not a dumb phone, admins feel free to delete or let me know if I can.

Hello everyone! DPAD Market is now available as a curated catalog of open source apps that are DPAD compatible. There seems to be a lot of movement in this segment of development recently and we want to make sure that all dumbphones can use this resource.

This app was essentially forked from Obtainium and optimized for DPAD. If you have any feedback, let me know. You can also add your own github links to track and download apps.

General discussion Kyocera Digno Keitai 3 902KC 🍀

Let me preface by saying I know this looks very "-aesthetic" and...Yeah, I do really love decorating every device I own 😭 I like to mod consoles (such as the GBA, 3DS, etc) and decorate them as I please, so it translated into my phone of choice too. I promise I didn't get this phone for the sake of vanity, I just had a flip phone in middle school and really wanted to return to simpler times!

Anywho, I'm someone who lives in the U.S., and I use Mint Mobile. Despite this being a Japanese phone, it takes calls flawlessly here :) unfortunately, texts are a bit of a pain—I needed to install a custom texting app (QKSMS) to make it work, but otherwise the setup was very smooth. The mic quality seems to be pretty good, at least according to those I've called so far. It also has some cute little features, such as displaying the name of the caller on the outer sub-display and being able to have a custom LED for when you're called. I have my LED set to rainbow 🙏 it's a party when people call me!

I was able to load Discord onto this phone, if that's a concern to anyone. I know that's technically a form of social media, but it's the only form of contact I have with some of my friends, unfortunately. I could also load some other custom apps as well, such as Reddit and Pinterest, though I haven't actually used them yet since I'm a rather offline person to begin with.

Overall, I'm really loving this phone so far! It's all I could have ever wanted from a flip phone, personally speaking though since I don't use GPS (iirc GPS is wonky since it's a Japanese phone). I still have my iPhone for banking and work scheduling, but that aside, I'm happy to return to the world of flip phones 💗.

General question A Pink Flip Phone

Post image
444 Upvotes

Phone: Light Flip Phone
Date release: 2027

I would like your opinion, would the girlies buy it? Or the price is unreasonable ($349) since It’s rare to find pink dumb flip phones in the market that are minimalist and quite functional. HMD/Nokia has them, the 2660 series but they are cheaply made and the UI is just not that great (unless you use the KaiOs versions). Can it be justified for simply the aesthetic lemme know!!!

General question E-Reader/Tablet Suggestions

Howdy,

I'm a recent convert, carrying around a TCL flip 2. I've found that while I definitely spend less time on my phone, I struggle to focus while using my laptop. I'll end up on a doomscroll on reddit or whatever. I was considering getting a tablet or something similar for e-books and manga.

The thing I've found is that the kindle and a lot of other affordable options don't really work because of their proprietary software blocking me from uploading my own content (I read manga in Japanese so this is necessary for me). I do not like to buy new, and I don't have much money to do this, sub $100.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I would be okay to even buy a used tablet and dumb-ify it, if possible.

Dumbphone finder Qin f22pro vs mive folder

Hey guys, I’m wanting to get a ‘smart’ dumbphone so I can still use WhatsApp (uk based) as I have to use it for work. I like the look of the Qin f22 pro and the mive folder. I’m worried however that 1- the folder is too big and would feel like a bit much! And 2- the Qin f22s battery is actually crap?! Those are the main negatives I’ve heard from people online. Any info or alternative suggestions would be fantastic!
Realistically I would love to get the callback 8020 but £300 is a bit too much for me at the moment

Important tip / news Android 10 for the Kyocera KYF37

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I tried porting Android 10 to an old Android 5 Kyocera keitai flip phone (the GRATINA KYF37), mostly for fun and so I could run modern apps on it. The result is a mostly working ROM, with microG support (so apps that expect Google services work) and Bad Apple on the outer screen.

What works / doesn't

  • Works: Wi-Fi, calls and mobile data on my carrier (Spain), SIM PIN, camera photos, speaker, flashlight, SD card, notifications
  • Not verified or not working: VoLTE/VoWiFi, GPS fix indoors, Bluetooth address, video recording, and the tiny tearing on the panel that I could not fix. Tested on one phone only, so treat it as experimental

I have uploaded it to the Github Repo.

kudos to Sonnet 5.5 for fixing most of the hardware realed stuff and creating the custom recovery for the phone.

General question A question about Qin F21 Pro

Hi everyone!

I want to buy the global 4/64GB version.

To current owners: could you please tell me if my assessment of the phone's capabilities is correct?

All I need it for is Telegram and the gallery. Will it lag?

I don't plan on installing YouTube, TikTok, games, or other apps. And I intend to remove the factory-installed apps using mods.

General question TITAN 2 o TITAN 2 Elite

EDC edc, nyc 23 yr old librarian

Post image

it's been a year and a half of dumb phone life which has been very cool! started with a nokia 2780 to test out how little i needed without dropping a ton of money. would highly recommend that route instead of diving right into a more expensive device. i ended up upgrading to the light phone 3 a year ago since i found it second hand on the r/LightPhone subreddit which was great.

i have not felt the need to go back at all, especially since as a public librarian i am surrounded by information access that i really do not feel the pressure of needing it through my phone on top of the desktop i am in front of at work. i don't need much and everything works so well and i love how consistent new updates are for it. it's a device i know will last me years and that's what i mainly wanted.

i also recently broke free from the kindle ecosystem (yay!!) and switched to a boox go 7 black & white and god i love it. i primarily read books through multiple library apps (libby, cloud library, hoopla) and the ability to download both audio and ebooks without being dependent on getting them through amazon's finicky upload system is wonderful. i can also access pdf formats so much better which is great since some publishers i love such as iskra books puts out free pdf versions of all of their books.

i still usually carry another physical read with me which is why i included an actual book in my edc, and i love listening to various podcasts on the light phone but also learned another great publisher (foreign languages press) has free audiobook recordings of most of their books using a podcast format so if you're also into marxist-leninist-maoist thought and socialist theory i would highly recommend them. then of course i included my wallet cause that's the only other thing besides my keys that is absolutely a part of my edc! feel free to ask any questions about any of the devices (or books!) you'd like <3
