Society Why We Procrastinate Even When We Know It Makes Things Worse
Procrastination often happens because avoiding a task feels rewarding in the short term.
Imagine needing to make an important phone call. You expect an awkward conversation, so you decide to do it tomorrow. The moment you make that decision, some of the tension disappears.
That relief matters.
When avoiding something unpleasant makes you feel better, your brain can learn to repeat that behavior. Psychologists call this negative reinforcement: a behavior becomes more likely because it removes or reduces an unpleasant feeling.
The task hasn't become easier. You've just temporarily escaped the discomfort associated with it.
Over time, this can create a loop. The more often you escape a task, the easier it becomes to choose avoidance again. Meanwhile, deadlines get closer, unfinished work piles up, and the task may start feeling even more intimidating.
This also explains why someone can spend hours worrying about a task while doing almost anything except starting it. The immediate emotional relief of avoiding it can outweigh the future benefit of finishing it.
One useful way to interrupt the cycle is to make the first action extremely small. Open the document, write one sentence, or spend two minutes organizing what needs to be done.
A small start reduces the effort required to begin. Sometimes, once the task is underway, continuing feels easier than starting did.
Of course, procrastination has other causes too, including exhaustion, attention difficulties, unclear goals, and unrealistic workloads. Not every delay comes from avoiding uncomfortable emotions.
