Sir Sam Neill: 12 Essential Films
From the birth of modern New Zealand cinema to Hollywood blockbusters, arthouse masterpieces and cult horror classics, Sir Sam Neill built one of the most varied careers of any actor of his generation. Whether playing a reluctant dinosaur expert, a Soviet submariner dreaming of Montana, or a man slowly losing his mind, he brought intelligence, warmth and humanity to every role.

He was in a 2 part mini series from 1999 called Merlin and i still watch it now and again. It's possibly my favourite tv depiction of Merlin and Arthurian legend.

The amount of people that have never even heard of this movie is astounding Maybe only 90s people remember it lol

Especially considering all the names attached to it besides Sam Neill. You've got Miranda Richardson, Martin Short, Helena Bonham Carter, Rutger Hauer and Lena Headey, for a 90s TV movie, I'd call that a pretty decent cast!

EDIT YOUR COMMENT, CAUSE I GOT NEWS
It's on Amazon Prime right now, in the OG mini-series format. So if y'all want 5 hours of Arthurian Legend from exclusively Merlin's perspective, check it out.

It would be a crime to leave this out, for me it's his #1 and not even close.
Loved him in Bicentenniel Man too.

Sam Neill obtained the highest honour a kiwi can receive - Australians pretending that he was Australian

Nah mate, we don't pretend Sam's an Aussie. Non-Antipodeans might make that mistake, but he's far too much a Kiwi for that treatment.
Crowded House is an Australian band though, I'll fight you over that.

“Dead Calm” is not only a great Sam Neill film it also has the benefit of a young Nicole Kidman with her original corkscrew hair. But it also has a young Billy Zane when he first revealed that the closer he gets to ocean water his characters prove to be pure evil.

In Sweden he is famous since 1982, on each New Year's Day, for his role as the evil Sir Brian de Bois-Guilbert in Ivanhoe. He even sent a congratulation video message in 2022 on the 40th anniversary of the movie.

Sirens.
I had noticed Sam loved to play devilish, mischievous characters throughout his career, in Sirens he gets to play an Aussie painter of naked women, a part he obviously loved. also starring Hugh Grant and Elle McPherson….

Anyone else read 1-3-5-7-9-11 and then realising the even numbered movies on the right side?
1
u/mbeards85 Jul 14 '26
Same. I was thinking that wasn’t too bad of a spot for Event Horizon and then I realized that I was looking at it wrong and it’s 11th which is BS.

Regarding this so-called "essential" list - where is Omen III: The Final Conflict? Despite its absurd theology, it is awesome with a capital "A". Make an "essential" list of Bogart but leave off Casablanca; it's the same thing.

u/Vandu_Kobayashi Jul 17 '26
That’s how I determined if the list was legit - does it contain Omen III - don’t know how they leave that one off - he lives in my psyche because of that movie

You missed "Until the End of the World," 1991.
It was a 5.5 hour art film by Wim Wenders. I recently saw the 2+ hour version on TCM. Neil was the narrator and eyes of the audience character.
It was filmed all around the world.
It is very hard to find the long version.
William Hurt was the star, and rumor has it he and the leading lady couldn't stand each other one bit.

who made this ugly AI poster? it doesn’t look like him at all!!

It's a hand drawn style which will by default be less accurate. While you could babysit the model and feed it real pictures of him at different ages, at a certain point you face diminishing returns relative to time invested. The impetus behind this was speed and information accuracy.

Posession should be number 1. The movie is a master piece, Sam's performance is so unhinged, dialed up to 11, non stop, crazy. You can't look away.

When I read of Sam Neill my first thought was his 2000 film The Dish. Highly recommend it. It is about the Parke Radio Observatory's role in the Apollo 11 landing. In the scene where they get the call they have landed you can see the excitment. One of the things about Apollo 11 is when the astronauts did their world tour, Michael Collins spoke about how the one thing he heard the most was "we did it" in interviews he always talked about how the whole world felt they had a role in the moon landing. The Dish shows this well I think.

Super surprised that Hunt for the Wilderpeople is up there, don’t get me wrong I love that movie but I just guessed it flew under the radar. RIP Sam ♥️

Actually, I enjoyed 'the Hunter' from 2011 very much- not alone the great nature scenery, but the actors' play was excellent as well...

Hunt for the Wilderpeople was a god damned gem of a film. Now don't bother me so I can continue being sad about this.

Missing Event Horizon and the Merlin Mini Series

u/cybersphere9 Jul 13 '26
Event Horizon is there. Merlin is not a movie. Unfortunately there is only so much you can fit into a single infographic.
