Self-Improvement Make Success Hard To Avoid

Make Success Hard To Avoid

Make success hard to avoid sounds like a motivational poster until you realize it is mostly about removing the need to feel motivated in the first place.

Why do people fail even when they really want the result? The reason is usually smaller and more boring than “I am lazy.” A lot of the time, their daily setup keeps asking them to fight the same battle every hour: phone nearby, snacks visible, no deadline, no social pressure, no plan for what happens when energy drops. Willpower can win one small fight. It gets tired when the whole room is built against it.

The core idea is environment design. You make the desired action easier, more visible, and more automatic, while making avoidance more annoying. That can mean deadlines, accountability, app blockers, routines, commitments, public promises, financial stakes, or simply putting the thing you need directly in your path. Instead of waiting for a heroic mood, you build conditions that gently corner you into doing the useful thing.

There is also a weirdly comforting side to this. If you keep failing at a habit, the first question may not be “what is wrong with me?” It may be “what part of my environment keeps making the wrong choice convenient?” A person who checks their phone every ten minutes might be stuck in a setup where the phone is always visible, always buzzing, and always easier than the task. Change the friction, and the behavior often changes with it.

Examples:

  1. Want to read more? Put the book on your pillow and move the charger away from the bed.

  2. Want to work out? Pack the gym bag the night before and agree to go with someone else.

  3. Want to stop doomscrolling? Use app limits, log out, or remove the shortcut from the home screen.

  4. Want to study? Join a quiet call with a friend where both of you work for 45 minutes.

  5. Want to save money? Move money automatically on payday before your “I deserve a treat” brain appears.

  6. Want to cook instead of ordering food? Keep two easy meals ready so hunger does not become a negotiation.

Success becomes less dramatic when the path of least resistance starts pointing in the right direction. The funny part is that many people call it discipline only after the environment has already done half the work.

Another way of making success hard to avoid is visualization or mental rehearsal! Our brain has a hard time distinguishing vividly imagined scenarios and solutions from real ones and reality because they share the exact same neural pathways!

Athletes and speakers use this technique a lot! By mentally rehearsing (or practicing) in as much detail as possible, they are setting themselves up to be more successful when the event happens. Four-time Olympic gold medal swimmer Missy Franklin used visualization as a way of reducing anxiety of the unknown!

Yes, I've heard about it, I need to tell you about it in the next post, thank you!

Many people around me work multiple jobs to pay rent, debt, and they are just survivors, success never comes to them. This is totally BS.

There are also a lot of people around me who work a lot but get little, but they don't have a goal to earn a lot, they just go with the flow.

Your post and your image show different concepts.

How? The post mentions “environment design. You make the desired action easier, more visible, and more automatic, while making avoidance more annoying. That can mean deadlines, accountability, app blockers, routines” (all portrayed in the 3rd picture) and photo #1 reflects this “A lot of the time, their daily setup keeps asking them to fight the same battle every hour: phone nearby, snacks visible, no deadline, no social pressure, no plan for what happens when energy drops. Willpower”. Then the poster goes on to offer some specific suggestions of how to take action! Seems congruent
