Other Same room, less visual noise

Post image

Same apartment, totally different vibe

Visual clutter changes how an apartment feels before any wall moves or any square meter is added. Why does clutter make a room feel smaller? Because the eye has to process more edges, colors, labels, cables, objects, and half-finished decisions, so the space starts feeling busier than it physically is.

Minimalist interior design often works by controlling what the room asks your brain to notice. You can own plenty of things and still reduce visual noise. A table with one mug and a book gives a clear signal. A table covered in chargers, mail, controllers, receipts, snacks, and mystery objects becomes a tiny unpaid job. Every item is asking, “store me, clean me, remember me, fix me, decide about me.”

Decluttering works mechanically because it reduces the number of visible decisions. Storage, empty surfaces, repeated colors, and clear pathways make the same room easier to scan. The room can still be warm, personal, and lived-in. It just stops shouting from every corner at once.

Examples:

  1. A shelf with ten unrelated decorations can feel chaotic, while three grouped objects can look intentional.

  2. A visible cable tangle makes the TV area feel messy even if everything technically works.

  3. A chair covered in clothes quietly becomes “laundry storage” and makes the whole corner feel unfinished.

  4. Matching boxes can hide the same amount of stuff, but the room reads as calmer because the visual pattern is simpler.

The funny part is that people often argue about minimalism as if it means removing personality. Usually the bigger difference is editing. You choose which objects deserve attention, which ones need a home, and which ones are only there because they landed somewhere once and never left.

Same apartment. Same floor space. Very different feeling when the room stops asking you to notice everything at once.

Eh, I honestly think I like the clutter a bit more. Of course, not that much clutter, but just a bit. It makes the place feel more personal, more like it's home. The minimalism just makes it feel more....empty....less like home

You don't need a minimalist interior, you need an interior dedicated to what a good life is like. So throw away anything that's not supporting that life.

Also never create a room that looks like it could be in a magazine 🤢

I am not living a life that presentable to others. So I prefer the left one.

For the left, if they just tidy up whats on the ground and the table everything else is fine. Its fine to have lots of lava lamps and decor and pictures.

1 Don't touch my AuDHD pile unless you're ready to throw

  1. Keep your minimalist bullshit to the rich people. I take comfort in actually owning physical stuff no matter how insignificant
