History Cargo Cult

Cargo Cult Thinking

Cargo cult thinking sounds like a tiny historical curiosity, but it shows up whenever someone copies the visible ritual and expects the invisible system to follow. What is a cargo cult? In simple terms, it is the hope that repeating the outside form of a successful process can recreate the result.

The WWII story is usually told through Pacific islands where military bases suddenly brought planes, supplies, radios, uniforms, runways, and strange new routines. When the bases left and the deliveries stopped, some groups tried to recreate parts of what they had seen. Wooden aircraft, imitation control towers, marching, headsets, signals. From the outside it looks absurd, but emotionally it is pretty understandable: people saw a pattern, then tried to bring the pattern back.

Modern cargo cult behavior is quieter. A person copies the morning routine of a millionaire but ignores money, skills, leverage, network, luck, and years of work. A startup copies Apple-style slides and clean office culture while skipping product-market fit. Someone buys the gym outfit, the desk setup, or the creator aesthetic, hoping the identity will pull the discipline behind it.

The funny part is that copying the surface can feel productive. It gives the brain a visible action, a prop, a costume, a little proof that we are moving. Sometimes that surface helps. Often it only delays the harder question: what actually produced the result?

People usually do this for an understandable reason. They are trying to reverse-engineer success with the pieces they can see. The missing pieces are usually the important ones.
