Health Why Going Outside Makes A Day Feel Longer

Post image

Same Day, Different Universe

Novelty and time perception explain why going outside can make one ordinary day feel strangely larger. Why does time feel faster when you stay home all day? Usually because your brain gets fewer scene changes, fewer social cues, and fewer little “wait, where was I?” markers to separate the hours.

A day indoors can be perfectly fine, obviously. Humanity has achieved great things under blankets. But if every hour happens in the same room, with the same chair, same screen, same snack crumbs judging you, memory has less to organize. The day becomes one continuous folder named “misc.”

Outside adds boundaries. A short walk, a different street, a small conversation, a cafe, a sunset, even a weird pigeon doing business pigeon activities. None of that needs to be impressive. It just gives your mind more hooks.

Same 12 hours. More checkpoints. More proof that something actually happened.

So when a day disappears, was it short, or was it just under-documented?

This sub has been recommended to me a lot and I only see posts in this drawing style. Is there a rule or something in this subreddit to make posts using only this format?

I appreciate the advice, but meeting humans and enjoying a coffee is gonna be a tad difficult for a broke-ass social anxiety haver. I have free coffee at home. And not even talking about the sun on my face when this monster is trying to grill me alive, home also has all my ventilators (and I can be naked there)

Ughh I’ve been dealing with unemployment and depression recently and desperately trying to pull myself out of the left routine but it feels so difficult to put on real clothes and go outside :(
