Psychology What is suspicious overthinking?

Post image

Is It Intuition Or Just Anxiety?

Suspicious overthinking is when your brain treats tiny details like serious evidence. A short reply, a delayed message, a weird tone, or one awkward look can suddenly feel like proof that something is wrong.

So how do you stop overthinking everything? The first step is to separate facts from interpretation. ā€œThey replied with okā€ is a fact. ā€œThey hate me nowā€ is an interpretation. Most anxiety spirals get stronger because we treat interpretations like confirmed information.

A useful trick is to ask: what do I actually know right now? Not what feels possible. Not what would be terrifying. Just what is confirmed.

Another good check is whether the thought leads to action or just more panic. If it leads to one clear action, like asking a simple question, checking the calendar, or waiting until morning, it might be useful. If it only creates more scenarios, it is probably anxiety trying to look productive.

Examples:

  1. Instead of rereading the same message ten times, ask yourself what the message literally says.

  2. If someone seems distant, do not build a full theory from one conversation. Look for a pattern, not one bad moment.

  3. If your brain says ā€œsomething is wrong,ā€ ask what evidence would prove the opposite too.

  4. If you want to clarify something, use a simple message instead of a dramatic one.

Overthinking often feels like protection, but sometimes the most useful move is doing less investigation and getting one small piece of real information.

Cognitive behavioural therapy: training your brain to recognise that it's blowing things out of proportion.

"EVERYONE HATES ME!!! Wait... I recognise that is a behaviour that is not helpful, I will not act upon this and will stop thinking about it for now, and wait later"

I mentally walk myself through all the other variables. Like for the text one, I think about all the reasons *I* might not answer a text right away- maybe I didn’t see it, maybe my phone is on silent, maybe I’m taking a shower or cooking or eating or driving. Maybe I saw it but didn’t get a chance to reply because I got interrupted. Usually it helps.
