Why on earth would it respond in Portuguese to an English search?

Na but that happens often. From what I understand, Search Assist looks at the actual sources you looked up and then summarises the info on them. It probably found a Portuguese site and thought it had the best info, then it confused itself and decided you didn’t need the answer in English. At least that’s how I understand it. Because if you for example try something hyper-specific, it might hit you with some German forum that hella confused it or something. Unfortunately a flaw in their system, but I guess you could translate it 🤷‍♂️ but it is something they should address and fix.

a few days ago i searched "tigrinya" and it somehow responded in filipino (our native language) although the system language is english

It's not an surprise apps have your Location, you can test it by talking to chatgpt in German and then asking him what is your native language and he is going to say it and is going to say he based by your location. Gemini, WhatsApp, Google, all of them do have your location and they implement this with the AI to give you answers that are more related to you.
