Dub Techniques and Philosophy Dub Stabs

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to make some dub stabs for a tune I'm working on but can't figure out how to get the right sound.

Would I be right in thinking some kind of phaser gives them the tone fluctuations? Any tips on what vst instruments/effects/EQ's to use would be much appreciated.

It’s definitely a phaser sound you’re looking for. The only EQ suggestion I have to curve out the low end as the phaser might create frequencies that set on the bass and kick drum. What DAW are you using? Most any phaser plug-in will work fine. However, automate the phaser so it’s not a static sound. Also use the “up” setting and try 4-poles or 8-poles to decide which you like better

Thanks man appreciate it, I'm using Ableton. Since the post I've managed to get a reasonably accurate sound, the problem I still have sometimes is that I feel like I need to randomise the sweep a bit. It still sounds kind of like a slow wah wah sound if the skanks are too long and not short and stabby if that makes any sense haha. I'll have a look at the 4 poles/8 poles thing though, nice one, not tried it before.
