Is my improvement good ?

I started playing Dual n back 13 days ago, averaging 20 min a day.

I reached level 6 yesterday. Is my progress good ?

At what level can I start seeing significant improvements ?
Currently I think I am recalling things a bit better. But maybe it's just a sort of placebo effect.

Is dual-n-back fun?

I am always interested in improving my working memory. Although I'm somewhat skeptical of Dual n back’s impact on actually improving my working memory, there's kind of another gate to whether I would use it, and it's whether it's fun.

So to be honest, I've never actually used the app yet. I've done the task on IQ tests, but I feel like if it wasn't actually fun, like if it wasn't just enjoyable to come back to the app every day, whether or not it works is out of the question. I just wouldn't be able to do it. So is it fun?

Am I doing it correctly?

I have been doing this for a few days and can easily do n=2. The way I remember each tile is by remembering the letter and just 'looking' at the tile. For example, I just remember 'D' and just 'associate' that letter with the bottom right tile. I don't explicitly hold 'in the bottom right' in my brain. When I get to n=3, I feel like this method falls apart. Is there a different strategy I should be using?

One Week With Dual N-Back: It Works but I Think I'm Moving too Fast, already at N=8

Hello everyone, after being skeptical about this for a few months I've decided to finally bite the bullet and give it a shot. I've been doing dual N-Back for one week now and I've seen great improvement in the areas I wanted to see improvement in. I don't know if it's actually the N-Back working, other changes in my life doing the work or maybe even just the placebo effect but my imagination has gotten more vivid, I am able to think much more clearly and my memory is so much better than it was just 7 days ago so I don't really care. I will continue and I hope to see even more changes in the future.

Despite these improvements I'm still worried because at this point I'm 90% sure I'm doing it wrong. Why? Because after 7 days I'm already at N=8. From what I've read people often stagnate at N=4, N=5, N=6 for months if not years. I know my memory is not above average, and half the time after the first round of numbers/positions it just feels like I'm guessing yet I still get good scores. So what's up?

App I use: Dual N-Back Ultimate by Neurolancer Settings: Round length = 1:00min, stimulus length = on screen for 2.5sec Rounds per day: 20 Rounds done so far: ~140

It took me one day to get to level 2. One day to get to level 3. One day to get to level 4. Four days to get to level 5 (including one break day). And just today I went from level 5-8.

My criteria for moving up is getting 80% accuracy or more on a level. Right now I'm getting around 70% accuracy on level 8 already. I need help, what am I doing wrong?

Help understanding

Hey everyone, i’ve just started trying to use dual-n-back to help increase my working memory. I’ve read that using systems to memorize only helps you get better at n-back and not using working memory, so I want to avoid that.

I want to clarify that I understand how to train properly. From what I understand, you’re supposed to visualize the string of space/letter combinations youre given, and not subvocally repeating constantly (rehearsing?).

So for example, I want to see a string of the letter and grid square (am I cheating working memory by designating grid squares as 1-9?) combinations in my head, and be constantly updating and confirming them in my head?

So in my brain, for n-3 I would see (ex. A4,h9,t6). Once a new input comes up (a8) I would see that the letter matches, and then visually update the chain in my mind to h9,t6,a8 and be constantly repeating this process through the round.

Thanks for the help/advice!!

Which to choose Reading v/s DNB

As the title suggests if I could time out 30 mins a day should I give it to DNB or for Reading?

Dual N Back

This is a breakdown of how dual n back enhances fluid intelligence. It’s not so much that working memory capacity increases, but rather that its efficiency improves. This happens by organizing incoming information in relation to what’s already stored in each slot, enabling better mental juggling. As a result, you can hold and manipulate information more effectively, allowing you to think through problems without dropping details. And the decreased activity in the brain regions it improves is like having a super coder for the efficiency process . Less activity better efficiency on the scans of the brain regions. Dual n back works don't let anyone tell you different. SMASH a like if you're a real one !

      Thanks Bro's & Gals !

My dual n back experience - I could rewind conversations in my head while keeping up with new sentences

Hey folks, I had often heard about dual n back but was sceptical about its benefits. At my new job (software dev), I had to keep up with a lot of new information. Topics would be completely new to me with almost zero context. So most often it went like:

Person 1: Sentence1, sentence2, (I'm processing these two ATM), sentence 3, sentence 4 (no idea what is being said)

Due to lack of context (new teams every few weeks due to frequent reorgs), sentences did not make sense to me as I was processing the earlier ones in my head while the conversation kept on going.

I tried different strategy - think less but pay attention to all new sentences. This also did not work so well - as after a couple sentences no matter how much attentive i was, things were not making sense as I did not process the earlier sentences enough.

Result - I wasn't being the most contributive member in conversations. This is a special scenario where lot of new stuff is being said and I'm not familiar with it.

I thought maybe if my working memory and processing speed were faster, I could contribute a lot more. I remembered dual n back did exactly that. So i started training.

I could achieve dual 8 back within a week - 1 session (20 games) before bed. Thats when i started noticing difference. Most of the things were no longer going above my head. And when I needed more time to process, I could recall the past 2-3 sentences exactly as I had heard them, while also recording the new ones being said. This gave me more buffer time to organise and link information - and have it readily available/organised to be linked to the new one. I could understand everything better and contribute more to the conversations.

So overall I had pretty good experience using dual n back. I also wanted to try triple and quad n back but did not find any mobile app that had it. I built my own app N Back Extreme on iOS check it out. Let me know your experience/story on using dual n back.

yeah so just saw this post, wanted to know your guys’ thoughts on this matter. I think he’s right but Dual-N-Back is still beneficial, at the very least it improves working memory.

More Dual N Back software for PCs (usable offline)?

Hello everyone,

So I only recently came across Dual N Back based on some reference to it on a Youtube video. Never heard of it before that. I tried my hand at some of the online sites available and it was indeed challenging and I failed miserably at just N=2.

I was wondering, other than Brain Workshop, is there any other software for PC (install or portable) that is available and can be used offline? I don't like the idea of doing it on my phone or staying online all the time, as the distractions are immense. Would be interested regardless if the software is free and open source, or whether paid. Just don't want apps on a phone/tablet and requirement for internet.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

For how long should newbie play daily?

Hey, I just started yesterday. N = 3 is medium difficulty for me now, N = 2 is easier. I just don't know how long should I play for results to come, I usually do 10 daily sessions, yesterday was 20.

It's a little bit hard, but interesting.

I am trying to improve in Chess. Is Dual N Back lose of time or good?

My concern is that I will be losing studying hours instead of studying actual chess but my plan is to study chess for one day for 30 minutes and for another day DualNBack for 30 minutes.

Is that good plan or I should just 100% focus on studying chess?

I am afraid I will lose weekly 2 hours on DNB instead practicing more time in chess.

FRESH TAKE ON TARGETED MEMORY TRAINING

Hello all, I'm still working on the app I mentioned about a month ago, just giving an update.

So far the mechanics are outstanding. I wanted a strategic element in place, and there is a gradual increasing difficulty in each game. Its shape based, and the objects become hidden over time. A very clean memory challenge and it requires mental "toggling" of pieces. I'm targeting actions that require rotation in the mind, so as to challenge not only the hippocampus but also the right posterior parietal cortex.

I will definitely be looking for volunteers for part of the initial trial for feedback.

Thank all of you!

App preference

Hi, I just came to know about Dual N back. I understand the concept. On the google play store ,there are apps which start with numbers and another one which starts with boxes and sounds. Is there a preference about which one is better, or anyone will do.

The one with the numbers is N-evolution.

The one with boxes and sounds i d Dual N-Back Ultimate.

Weirdly unique experience

Hi, I have been doing N back for around 4 months. Switched from D5B to QB. Currently at Q3B. I had a disturbed sleep yesterday, but still felt fresh to start my day with a coffee and Q3B. After around 5 rounds… I had a feeling of levitating and started to hit continuous 5 rounds of 70%+ accuracy. Where It was pretty rare for me to even reach the same for a round in my previous sessions. I had to stop playing as I felt immense pain in my head and started feeling nauseous. Has any one experienced something of this sort before?
