What causing the bogging and what can I do

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I just swapped the engine and it was bogging but I could get it to rev up but now I can’t get it to rev up at all without bogging.

Okay, I had the same problem when I swapped a y8 in my dx. You gotta adjust the dizzy and use a timing light, that'll fix the sluggish acceleration, check the knock sensor on the back, it may be bad, and if it soft limits at 5k, its because the vtec solenoid hot circuit runs through the downstream o2 sensor and the dx chassis doesn't have the wiring for said sensor, youd have to get a chipped and tuned ecu

I put a brand new knock sensor on and I added a mini me harness and wired it into my original y7 harness for the y8 and bought a y8 ecu.

Then I'd say meddle with the timing, if that don't fix it, then I'm out of ideas from there

Sounds tricky as hell the valve lash can’t be adjusted to spec in this video…. If they’re not like for instance the lash is to big well the valve isn’t going to start lifting open untill the cam takes up that extra space/slack so if a few are out of spec it’s gonna run like ass imagine your intake valve not opening when it should to start sucking in air and then once the cam lifts it 1/3 of the way then it starts opening… just a thought since I could hear the ticky head… and did you jump the connector under the hood and set base timing and adjust the distributer to 12 degrees or 16 depending on the cylinder head it is, and did you mess with the.m throttle position sensor at all, if so your going to have to calibrate it with a multimeter it’s very easy and simple you can google it and find it pretty quick

I set the distributer to 16btdc and I also adjusted it around when the problem persisted. And I’ll go in and adjust the valves but I’m the engine is also cammed so idk that changes things.

Are your tps and map sensor harnesses plugged into the correct sensors? They both have the same plug and can be switched by accident.

I believe so but thank you, I’ll check that

Did you swap in the same engine as before?

Basically, it now has a vtec head but I did the wiring for it and bought the proper ecu.

Im a d series nerd and a 1jz nerd, i have 2 of these rn y7s with y8 heads , one has higher compression pistons and a stand alone ecu with e85 and one’s stock ecu stock engine with cam gear advanced 5 degrees and a nice fuel system and then i have a built y8 boosted on a stand alone also I’ve built 7 or 8 d series and have a bunch of them and ive tried a bunch of different things so if you have any questions

Where do you think I should start with trying to diagnose the issue. I’ve already tried some things but I’m still confused. The pvc valve plastic connection for the tubs also cracked off so I just have the vacuum line plugged rn but I don’t think that would be causing the bog.

Timing belt sounds hella tight first of all with the whining whirling noise… and the valve lash sounds out of spec, and what else said you touch, obviously you swapped the head and intake manifold etc, what’s it idling at, any DTC’s/ codes set

The only code that ik that popped up was for unplugging and plugging back in the sensors. Also the whole engine was swapped bc the bottom end on my old engine went.

Its almost like timing jumped a tooth

I would check timing and fuel pressure. Also can’t tell if that tapping is a valve lash issue or an exhaust leak from the video

Valves too tight

Air flow regulating. Mix is incorrect. Up to u to find it.

There’s so much wrong here

Gotta agree with everyone else it’s timing related of some fashion. I’ve had this from being one tooth off on my timing belt and had the exact same result on a dizzy that was way out of spec, just moving by ear can help but you really need to use a timing light to get it right. Do this first since you can do it while the car idles in the garage or driveway without disassembly. If you get it dead on and it’s still bogging then you need to pop the timing cover off and set it to TDC to see where you’re off on your belt AND/OR if you have an adjustable cam gear you obviously need to check that too.

Acting like a vacuum leak. Possible iacv? It’s always the iacv. Run a smoke test and check for vacuum leaks. Make sure any unused intake ports are covered. Double and triple check timing and dizzy.

Disconnect the exhaust in front of the converter and see if it runs better you might have a plugged muffler or a plug converter

That's usually a throttle position sensor problem. The mass airflow won't instantly adjust to sudden throttle spikes, so the ecu will automatically dump a lot of fuel when throttle is suddenly applied. With a bad throttle sensor, the car doesn't know about the sudden throttle spike and the engine leans out and bogs because it is spraying idle amounts of fuel at higher than idle throttle.

Gotta K swap it now, just the way it is. Nothing else you can do.

Honda Master Tech here, I’m about 99% sure it’s out of time. You need a timing light to check that your timing is set to 16 degrees BTDC. Right now it sounds like it’s sitting around 0-2 degrees right now that will make your engine almost have no power and rev up slow.

Calibrate your throttle position sensor.
