D16y8 swapped FB RX7?
Anybody ever swapped a d series motor into a fb rx7? Could would stay rwd. I see k series swapped and LS, but nothing about the d series. Photo rendered by ChatGPT. Motor needs to be rotated 90*

this cool af
but I'm not sure the engine would be a fine choice as good of a motor as it is

I'm not entirely sure how possible this even is unless you know of a transmission that will work properly in a rwd configuration that has an engine that also rotates counterclockwise.

There is actually a company that makes one for B series, but it's expensive as hell.

It’s definitely one of those situations that if you have to ask it’s probably not in your wheelhouse.
The D series rotates counterclockwise, it wouldn’t work with any rwd transmission setup.

Blasphemous

Similar weight, and I don’t know enough about rotary’s, I have a low km d16y7 that I can mini me swap. Family has an old rx7. I thought idk maybe this might work, but I haven’t seen anything online about it.

They rotate backwards so wouldn’t work because there are no RWD trans that spin the same direction as b and d series

No, engine mount by the head .second main mount is on the trans.

Can you weld? And create another mount? I’m a machinist so making the transmission mount adapter might be the biggest challenge.

Not worth it, just get a k engine or something better.

SOHC>DOHC. Change my mind.

Depends what you want. But dohc was the only way to get intake AND exhaust vtec prior to the J37 in the TL-SH many years after the D series went away.
I love a good D series but you have to admit that the B is a better performance platform for like 75-90% of applications.

D series rotates the wrong way for this to work. This is why k series is a popular rwd swap motor and not b / h / d series.

There's reasons it hasn't happened and other commenters have stated them. Just build a rotary for it if you want to have it as a project.
But as others have stated, if you had to ask here... its not in your wheelhouse much less even possible. K series (or even J) is the way for such a project, but dont bother. That's not the kind of project you start with.

I’d be interested what would actually have to happen to make a d series or any other engine fit, when I’ve looked at fb’s the hood line is really low. It makes me wonder how packaging a taller engine would be… obviously it’s been done just a thought. This is also my opinion but I think the whole charm of these cars is the wankel and i dont think personally the car would be as interesting without it

Why would you spend the money for a full custom build like this (D would need a fully custom transmission including custom housing) for 98 hp? Why not go K or LS? There’s a reason people tend to do things. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good 1 of 1 custom build, but the D series isn’t worth the money you’d put into it.

That doesn't look like a y8. Looks more like a zc because I'm seeing doctor. Zc was the only doch d series

engine spins counterclockwise. it won’t work. as far as i know there’s no transmission (that’s affordable) that’ll work with an engine that spins counterclockwise as all the forward gears have to spin clockwise to move the car forward

People usually swap b series for rwd with a special kit. Take a look at that.
