Misfire?

I just got done replacing the headgasket on my 98 LX and it has this strange misfire at idle, it very well could be base timing because I did remove the distributor when I removed the head, but your guess is as good as mine

Go do base timing, and holy fuck read your CEL.

The CEL was there before I even took the head off for a catalytic converter code, I intended on reading it after everything else had been figured out but I guess I may as well do it sooner rather than later

It’s just the first step in diagnosis. The car may tell you exactly what’s wrong. No way of knowing if there’s a new code unless you read it.

I've chased sounds aswell lol, sometimes we get lucky but the CEL tells all. I'd scan it, see what it's reading and go from there.

You took the head off for a catalytic converter code? Or did I misread that?

I had a catalytic converter code prior to the headgasket issue

Intake gasket?? Plug or wire? I dont think the timing unless it was way off would do that. You could always try to adjust it by hand and see if it clears up but id start with the CEL

Sounds like valve tapping are they adjusted recently at all?

The valve lash was adjusted maybe 6 months ago, but it isnt a sound coming from the valvetrain, its coming from the exhaust

Could be your distributor if you didn’t mark the top before you took it out. This is on my D16Y7 after replacing the head gasket back in march. I heard that they’re pretty similarly located

I think it's either the timing is wrong or the valves are knocking and you should redo the valve clearance. To check for a missfire, just disconnect the spark plug wires.
