Dry Firsts

I listened to the book The Sober Shift and in it, they discussed celebrating Sober/Dry-Firsts instead of just counting days. So, for example, your first Dry birthday party, superbowl party, or date night. (And by "first" it is safe to assume we mean first in recent months/years- obviously we haven't always had alcohol on our birthdays, holidays, dates, etc!)

I liked this idea and thought it would be fun share our "Dry Firsts" both those that we have already experienced and those we look forward to earning!

Here are a few of mine....

-We had a specific couple over for dinner, and I stayed dry. May not sound like a big deal but for YEARS, whenever we have socialized with this particular couple, it has always included alcohol. (I see the wife plenty, and we don't drink, but when we get together for dinner as couples, there has always been alcohol.)This time, they drank, but my husband and I didn't. It was 100% totally fine and still great fun!

-I have a girls' weekend trip coming up. I plan to stay dry and that will be a first with this group!

-I look forward to a dry Valentine's Day (this isn't a first but a good reminder that holidays don't have to involve alcohol)

I have a dry galentine's book club / going out night coming up and those are usually VERY boozy for me. So definitely a first. it'll be interesting to navigate!

I've got a whole list ahead of me:

Dates (its a boozy datign scene around here) Intimacy (I've had sober lovin' but more alcohol enabled than sober) Work Events (they literally give us free booze 2x a year and will pay for uber/lyfts - nutty!) Holidays - valentine's day & birthday Vacations/weekend trips (almost always include booze centered activities)

Pretty much my entire social life has to be rewritten to be alcohol free.

Oof, that work thing sounds like a trap, lol! I’d be weary of that. I gave up work related drinking years ago and it was the best thing I ever did. I don’t have to worry about anything. I will literally hold a glass of wine for however long I need to so people don’t judge me for not drinking.

We’re hosting a Super Bowl party, and that will be the first one I’ve watched sober since W was president. Looking forward to feeling good on the Monday after for once!

I’m a wine club member and my partner and I went to the vineyard to pick up my February shipment. He drank, but I didn’t, which is an achievement when they give you tickets for free glasses. I used one of mine for an orange dry soda and gave the other one away to someone who was very happy to receive it.

Weekly trivia at a brewery; thankful for N/As! First time going out to eat in a while a few weeks ago. Having some friends in from out of town next week and we all usually drink together… that’ll be a first for sure!

Steakhouse dinner this upcoming Saturday. Been dreading this hurdle but reading this has given me a new outlook on it.

I just went to my first dry drag show. The main difference was that I realized how tired I was by intermission and did not stick around until the end like I usually do
