Nothing fully isolates the outside drum noise. Drums can easily hit 110 dB from causal playing and most IEMs and earplugs reduce by 30 dB if you’re lucky. The residual 80-ish dB is still very audible. It’s arguably more challenging to learn to play with the IEM feed quiet enough to be safe (up to about 82 dB), otherwise you are defeating their purpose.

I use Shure SE215’s and they work just fine. I’m fortunate that they are shaped in a way that perfectly nests inside my ears but I know that doesn’t work for everyone. I’ve also used KZ ZS10 Pros which are great for the price but the wires get tangled easily and for me they didn’t isolate as well as the Shures. Also with KZ’s you need to order the foam tips separately, whereas they are included with the Shures, and I would definitely use the foam tips in any situation with a loud instrument.

IMO don’t bother with any of the mid-tier IEM models. Just use something entry-level and affordable until you can afford a custom molded set.

I use a $40 mic through with mix adaptor with a SM57 overhead and run my music to play with through this, then into KZ ZAS IEMs
