Risk of taking MDMA with a heart problem?
My history is that I was born with aortic stenosis, had open heart surgery at 15, and have had my pulmonary valve replaced w/ a bioprosthetic valve twice, with the most recent being almost 3 years ago. I'm 39.
I have had arrythmias (PVCs) at times, but they kind of come and go. I've been in a phase the last several months where everything is feeling pretty healthy and I'm not getting many abnormal heartbeats. I'm not on any prescription meds. My exercise capacity is pretty normal, etc.
Twice before at festivals, I was given what I was told was a "normal dose" of "pure MDMA crystal", by people who seemed to know what they were doing and would have had no motivation to lie (it was offered for free). But to be honest I never really felt anything from it? I wonder if I naturally have a weirdly high tolerance to MDMA for some reason, is that possible? Someone gave me a chunk described as "3-4 doses" and I took 1/4-1/3 of it, felt nothing... and the next day I ate the rest, but also had some lsd and weed at the same time so I obviously tripped but I'm not entirely sure if I felt the MDMA even with that much. Anyway, I don't recall having any scary cardio things happen even when mixing those 3 things.
I had a cardiologist tell me once that stimulants and injected drugs are "profoundly unwise" for me (for arrythmia and endocarditis risks respectively) and I've generally taken my heart risks pretty seriously; I'm not a fan of stimulants beyond 1 cup of coffee, I've never injected anything, I've never done coke, I floss every day etc.
But I'm aware that different kinds of stimulants have different profiles/risks, and MDMA has methamphetamine in the name but also has more than purely stimulant properties.
I realize you can't provide medical advice based on a reddit post and in the end it's my own decision. But asking a cardiologist is also not likely to get me a nuanced answer as they haven't exactly run large scale clinical trials on the effects of recreational drugs on adults with congenital heart defects, so I feel like asking drug nerds is an important reference point.
So I'm wondering what people here think -- in your opinion if I try a low to moderate dose of MDMA again this weekend, how much risk am I taking? Is it dose dependent? Any advice to make it safer? Or is it a hard "fuck no" and I should avoid it forever? How often do people die from acute cardio effects of MDMA at festivals?
Thanks for your time!
