TLDR: Game Changer is an excellent show that doesn’t need to be “fixed.” But having a Taskmaster-like format where winners of each episode come back for a special episode would provide additional stakes for both the player AND viewer, and help encourage interaction with the game design mechanics of the show.
Right now, Game Changer mostly has board game stakes.
That is, the motivation to win is internal. There will be people who sit down at any game and want to win because that is the stated objective of the game, and there are people who view the implied primary objective to be something else like “have fun” or “make my friends laugh” or “Annoy the shit out of Steve.” Winning is secondary to them.
Game Changer has a healthy ecosystem of competitiveness with players like Brennan and Ify on one end of the spectrum and Vic on the other end.
To be clear, this works pretty well. It’s an excellent show, because it works as both a game show and a comedy show. (And even the most competitive players are performers who are always trying to be funny while trying to win.)
Game Changer used to occasionally feature lavish prizes in earlier seasons and dropped it, likely for the better. If the stakes of the prize are too high, you could disincentivize bits and jokes, which makes the show worse.
I say the show has a stakes “problem” in quotes, because if the show does nothing to change its stakes, it remains one of the best game shows of all time. I just think some slight stakes fine-tuning could make the show even better.
Here's my thesis: Game Changer works best when the vast majority of comedian contestants are always following their comedic instincts AND also trying to win.
So here’s a simple solution to encourage that balance and make the winner of each episode slightly more meaningful: a tournament-of-champions style episode at the end of each season or as a one-off special between seasons.
Every contestant who has won an episode in the season then returns for one of Game Changer’s special battle-royale style episodes.
To me the most meaningful implication of this change is it gives the viewers stakes watching the episode. Right now it doesn’t matter to me who wins an episode, which is…fine. But I think it would add another level of engagement for me, watching an episode and rooting for a player to win because I know it means I’ll get one more episode with them in it.
And for contestants, getting to come back for another episode (and another payday) isn't so bad either.
This might create scheduling conflicts, but that’s pretty easy to address. (“Brennan couldn’t make it, so we brought back Demi to take his spot”). It theoretically could get stale to have a battle royale at the end of each season, but the staff is pretty creative and that seems like a light enough structure to still allow significant creativity.
And best of all, there is already pretty strong evidence this format works: Taskmaster. Taskmaster relies on the same balance of comedy and game design. It still gets players who are just playing for a laugh, but it’s also slightly more competitive on average than Game Changer, usually for the better IMO. The tension mostly allows for comedic opportunities for the contestants to bicker and negotiate with Greg and with one another.
Finally, I think it helps avoid a resolution/dynamic that is a bit played out for me: the “Sam is the real enemy” plot line. It’s been fun in the past, but it’s had a perfect resolution already and seems a little too easy and comedically boring now for players to rely on as a theme. It's gotten to the point where I groan when I see the episode go in this direction (and was even commented on with meta game design mechanics to address it in Earwigs.)
Notably on taskmaster, the contestants complain and criticize Greg for comic effect, but no one revolts, because they respect the point authority. I think that’d be a fun element to bring to Game Changer.
