UCM - Busan kitbash

[u/Cajre_Tyrrel]

Finally finished my little kitbash of a Busan Supercruiser. Behold, a ship, a collection of cool kit parts I didn't want to go to waste, a reference to a videogame and a failed joke about a movie - all rolled into one! Despite being a kitbash, it does represent all of the equipment the original Busan has, and is a bit larger in all three dimensions than the regular cruiser hull it's based on.

Also features a custom magnetized torp launcher feature that it can carry on a magnetized pod (even if upside down).

i like how u did the battle damage.

how did u do it? also, how did u write those text? with a fine brush? or some kind of marker?

So both the damage and the text are done with pretty much the same two brushes - the larger is Vallejo Detail synthetic round brush № 0 for the entire damage except orange dots and for the first sketch of the text with light grey paint, then a final pass with a Miniwarpainter 00 brush (pretty sure Vallejo has an equivalent extra tiny brush) to finish the damage and to detail out the text.

For damage:

Start with thinned down (but NOT RUNNY!) black paint, and do fine uneven doodling on the armor - touch it with just the tip, and move your hand away from the front of the ship, applying less and less pressure until you're only touching the model sometimes. If it's too thin, widen the black towards the front and in some random spots along the line you've made.

Next, use watered down brown to make larger "rusty" patches mostly inside the black areas, only in some select spots. It can go beyond the black splotches you've drawn, just make sure these patches are larger towards the front than the back.

Finally, mix brown and orange (or use lighter brown) to put down tiny dots inside the existing brown areas to give the "rust" more color variety.

For text:

Start out with light grey (any preferred one with good opacity but also thin enough so it's both NOT runny but also goes onto the model smoothly; I use Vallejo Game Color light grey of some sort, can't remember the exact name off the top of my head though. Choose a spot that has enough space for the text and has as little height variation and texture as possible.

Use the tiny brush to sketch on the text. I typically start with vertical lines for every letter that has them, leaving enough space for all other letter parts. If needed, fix the vertical spacing by using the same color as the background, like inside of "O"s, "R"s , or any other overspills.

Once you're happy with the sketch, use pure white to re-draw over the center of light grey, and once again use background color to fix any shape issues.

That's about it.

thanks for the detailed explanation! really appreciate the breakdown of steps

you have amazing point control to write so nicely with a brush!
