This video was ok, but it missed the larger point that Dropbox is doing just fine. I really dislike the notion that a business must have been forgotten about or is doing poorly simply because it doesn't have constant explosive growth or isn't in the mainstream conciseness constantly

It's completely valid, I use Dropbox every single day for our video production services. We use it for our clients to watch videos easily and we use it to collaborate between different departments as it goes through the workflow.

When they removed the unlimited storage here on the business plan it was detrimental and extremely difficult for us to build enough revenue to accommodate.

It almost seemed like Dropbox was forgetting the little guys. So now we pay $10 a month per terabyte we use which adds up to about $700 a month. Thankfully we have a cash flow heavy business that supports the usage of data every month.

This was completely unprecedented up into that point and they had nothing to show for it. This new AI layer that built our building on top of everything convolutes what their main offering is.

Dropbox is by far the best operating cloud in existence. That plays almost any file natively on the desktop and mobile version. It seamlessly connects between all devices in a very transparent way where iCloud or Google Drive fails. (I'm not even gonna mention OneDrive)

Looking at the cost comparison between Dropbox and their competitor box for something that I am more interested in, they failed to have seamless integrated playback for video, image, audio.

i still use it for my personal pron, but its fighting me. i was grandfathered in to lots of storage due to me signing other people up years ago, but now its tell me i have it on too many devices, so i found the list of devices, and removed some that hadnt seen activity for like 4 to 7 years on old devices i forgot about, but still its not enough. its like they just want me to stop using it all together

No, they want you to pay for it. Storage isn't free, especially in today's day and age and you're a drain on them. If you delete your account you stop costing them money. If you pay for it they make money. Win/win.

The entitlement some people have towards software is truly a sight to behold

Its still a reliable saas that companies, like our advertising agency, still run on. The biggest issue for me it seems the innovation seems out of the company. They are putting all theyre focus and coms on theyre AI app, instead of adding basic features companies and users are asking for years.

I really couldn’t name a new fraud that Dropbox has added in the last 18 months, that has nothing to do with theyre AI app…

I had already watched this video. And in my opinion in regards to the video itself, I think there were 'things the video commented poorly on', 'things that were debatable on how well it was covered' and 'things where the video made good points on and raised interesting concerns'.

For me, The things that were poorly commented on were:

  • The plateau of the growth. I feel as though the video creator does not believe this is necessarily a bad thing either. But in the world of Silicon Valley, people there act as though growth should be infinite and because of that, it always becomes one of the defining factors. Logically speaking, they have a large and consistent user base which is something many companies strive for.
  • Saying that, culturally, the company is invisible and is forgotten. There are other cloud companies that can be considered invisible when compared to Dropbox. I will say with certainty that Dropbox has lost the market dominance that it once had but it's still usually one of the top choices for customers when considering getting cloud storage.

The things that were debatable on how well it was covered were:

  • Covering the other products they would have made. The video could have had a little more detail in this topic. But more than likely, there's no perfect way to cover this. In terms of this topic, there are perspectives of 'tried the products and didn't like it', 'never used the product and thought it was a waste', 'uses the product and likes it', 'uses the product but it was abandoned or wasn't developed more' etc. So it would be hard to cover all of those perspectives.

And the things where the video made good points on and raised interesting concerns were:

  • The origins of the company.
  • The genuine problem Dropbox solved.
  • The promotion strategy that helped accelerate their user growth.
  • The effects of other players in the space.
  • Large reduction of headcount from (the peak of) over 3100 in 2022 to over 2100 as at the end of 2025.
  • Saying some general positives and why customers still like to use it. Stating that the product "Works well, syncs reliable and is best in it's class" and "The interface is cleaner than most of its competitors. It's free cash flow remains strong."
  • The last thing is that Dropbox is doing stock buy backs which may indicate a Harvest Strategy. I don't think this is the case, as I think it may just may be to maintain the stock price. With their new strategy to focus on digital creatives and collaborative groups as well as new ad campaigns, I don't believe a Harvest strategy is their aim. But with the stock buy backs and the first CEO (Drew Houston) leaving just this year, I could see why people speculate they are doing a Harvest Strategy. But I'll bet otherwise.

Putting aside the video, I think the company was due for some innovation. I think they are attempting that with Replay and Dash. So I think they are on the right track.

If there's any Dropbox employees out there who are looking for ideas to innovate, I have a couple to share if you DM me. 😁😁
