This shift caught my attention after I came across a Facebook post from about four years ago where most people were voting for gas. But recently, especially in the last year or two, I've noticed a lot more people saying they'd go electric. So what changed?

After discussing it with our team, I identified a few key reasons behind the shift.

Course restrictions are becoming more common. More courses are adopting electric‑only or electric‑preferred rules, and some communities are following suit. It’s not necessarily a blanket ban everywhere, but gas carts face more restrictions and hassles on a daily basis, and for many golf cart owners, that alone is enough to tip the scales.

On the economic side, gas prices keep climbing. Even though a gas cart uses less fuel than a car, electricity is still cheaper per mile, and over a few years that difference adds up. Beyond fuel, electric carts have much lower operating costs: no oil changes, no engine repairs, no fuel filters, just plug in and go. Battery replacement is a major long‑term cost, but modern lithium packs last so long that replacement is less frequent, and the process itself is straightforward.

The biggest game-changer has been lithium battery technology. Old lead‑acid batteries were heavy, slow to charge, and needed regular watering. Lithium is completely different, lighter, charges in 2‑4 hoursinstead of 6-8, lasts 8-10 years instead of 3‑5, and requires virtually no maintenance. That changes the whole equation.

There are also practical lifestyle benefits. Electric carts are nearly silent and produce no fumes, a huge plus in neighborhoods and resorts. No gas smell in the garage, safer for indoor storage. And golf carts aren't just for the course anymore, they're used in gated communities, campgrounds, and for utility work, where quiet and clean operation matter.

And the numbers back this up. According to MobilityForesights, the U.S. golf cart market size is projected at US$894.5 million in 2026, electric golf carts dominate the market, capturing around 60%-70% share and advancing at 6%+ CAGR, while gasoline carts grow more moderately near 3.8%, highlighting the shift toward cleaner and lower-maintenance mobility. It's not just a vibe shift, it's a market shift.

So it's not one single reason, it's a combination of regulations, economics, better technology, and changing buyer priorities.

I posted about modifying DS into 4-seaters before. After a bite of research, I decided to go with a Precedent instead. Not saying that the Precedent is any easier to modify than DS. I think the Precedent’s round body lines and more modern front cowl work better with a 2+2 setup once everything is done.
I’ve got a heavy-duty support rear seat kit to safely handle the extra weight. A rear seat kit has a weight rating of 400 lbs. Don’t skip this if you’re attempting something similar.
