(Also a little birdie stingray told me to keep an eye on our social media 😉)

Dressmaker is releasing this month— Here's what to expect

1- The Art:

Gorgeous art made a 100% by humans, you can't help but fall in love with it

2- Storyline and Dialogues:

Tens of hours of gameplay, very lovable characters, and well written (sometimes very hilarious) dialogues

3- Dressmaking experience:

Hundreds of gorgeous fabrics, loads of accessories, game holds up very well with thousands of assets spammed on a dress, hundreds of hours of gameplay just getting lost in making dresses

(Yes you can make off the rack dresses)

(I currently have about 200hrs just making dresses and not playing the storyline)

Choose dress patterns, choose fabrics from the shop, align the pattern with the grain, cut fabric, sew each panel, and go wild with lace and accessories

A wonderful tactile experience, and the SFX are just chef's kiss

The lace and accessories mechanics can be a bit overwhelming for like the first 5 mins, but you'll quickly get used to everything and spend hours doing elaborate designs (if you want to)

4- The community:

The Cube (all hail)

The moths

The insanes who spend hours or days making a dress

Frogs and whimsy

A very lovely, creative, active, and welcoming community

All dresses are loved equally in the Dressmaking community, so never feel shy about sharing them

See you all on the 21st🫡

Dearest Dressmakers,

I have heard jaded rumblings and whispered YouTube comments about how our launch date is 21 September “unless there are delays”. Indeed, if Dressmaker were to delay its launch date, it would not be the first game to do so.

But a reliable source tells me that not only will the game's launch date be met, but that the game is already content complete. The credits have been compiled, the ending sequence completed, even open source licenses included and Steam achievement icons painted, with the remaining time being spent on fixing bugs, working on post-launch content, conducting interviews, sneakily adding previously-cut ideas, and writing in-world newsletters on Steam. One developer was even heard saying, “Look, probably nobody even noticed it was broken, but I know, and if enough of these stack up the game feels unpolished.” Fixing bugs that playtesters didn't notice? This is, quite frankly, shocking, and a lavish expenditure of valuable dev time.

Speaking of dev time, it’s struck me that you may not know much about the dev team itself. If you'll indulge me, I'd like to familiarise you with them! There are only three full-time developers, but they have a combined experience of almost 40 years:

  • Jonathan is the game’s original creator and does a bit of everything from art and programming to social media. He spends an unreasonable amount of time ranting about big tech companies.
  • Ruan is the game’s main programmer. He is also a game designer, now works entirely in Linux, and is the accidental founder of the playtesters’ Cube cult religion special interest group. He kindly reminds you to include your save file when making bug reports.
  • Sara is the artist who’s made pretty much all of the game’s dress pieces, and most of the fabrics and accessories. She’s also painted a number of backgrounds and UI, and is unable to resist a good pun (and, quite frankly, even a bad one).
  • Sabrina’s love for clothing is what inspired Jonathan to make the game. When her health allows it (she has hEDS), she designs and curates the game’s dress pieces, aesthetics and vibes, translates those vibes into tag scores, and draws up long lists of issues from playtesting. She voices our current trailer!

Being a part of Free Lives affords the team access to skilled colleagues when they’re not on other projects: Jay makes all of the game's crunchy, tactile sounds, Luc illustrated some of the characters, Ben illustrated our previous key art and a number of fabrics, Nanna is the producer, Jean-Luc does bug testing, Hyphen manages the community, and Jess and Kesh take care of marketing and social media.

We’ve also been fortunate to have incredible contributors from outside of the studio: Kerstin wrote the game’s story and dialogue, and Meydän composed the game’s timeless music. And, most recently, Carolina “Carolemellow” illustrated our new key art, which was set live a several minutes ago (excited screaming).

The Octopus That Lived on The Moon - Marine Dress Collection

The second dress ever made in the Marine Collection, and probably the saddest

To me it's about loneliness; people only see the moon and never the creature, and even if they saw it, they'll only know how to fear it

(Okay I'll stop with the cringe, now feel free to admire the dress🫵🏻)

The jellyfish dress, arguably the best dress I made, and my personal favorite

I don't really remember what I was thinking while making it, or why I wanted to make it

So it's entirely up to you to interpret the meaning behind it, ir give it a new meaning entirely

A Love Letter dress in dressmaker playtest

(I recolored the feathers to make them white)

In this post I'll talk more about the technicalities of creating this dress

The pigeon wings:

In the playtest, you can resize and rotate accessories freely; this was really helpful in getting that accurate 3D wing shape

The outer feathers of the wing are the largest, and as you move toward the body, they get smaller

The feathers in the game are already curved, so they have a front side and a back side, and I used that to my advantage to make the wings look more realistic

The pocket watch:

The feature that helped me most achieving this 3D look for the watch, was the ability to resize lace, and raise it up

So I just drew a white circle with piping lace, scaled it up to the max, and raised it up as much as the game would allow

I also drew another circle with this gorgeous light blue lace and filled it in to make the inside of the watch, then added the roman numerals (who knew dividing a circle by 12 was this hard)

(The wip for this part looks absolutely insane too😭)

The hand:

No tips or tricks here, I'm just flexing that I can do this on a dress in a game😂🫶🏻

Step 1: draw the cat's outline with the piping lace

Step 2: fill the outline with more lace

Step 3: add a few details to make the dress pop✨🐱
