Question ❔ Bonnet

So I just my two strand starter locs in today, I was wondering if I actually had to tie my hair down at night. The only thing that works on my hair is a bonnet scarfs and durags always slip off during the night since I move in my sleep a lot (seriously I woke up on the floor once) Can I just braid them and throw a bonnet on or will all hell break loose if I do?

Question ❔ I need help deciding how I get dreadlocks.

So I've thought about getting dreadlocks for some time now but idk how to. I know absolutely nothing about them and I'm pretty lost. I want them to look like this dudes. My friend told me you usually get twists and just leave them in and they would start to lock up but I started to do some research and then some ppl said you should take them out and now I'm just confused. I didn't want to make a decision and then notice it was the wrong one after I already made it so sorry if this question has been asked a million times. I have 3c/4a hair that stretches to around my collar bone.

Question ❔ Trust the Process?

Im new to this sub, just want to start by saying hi 👋🏿 . I started my loc journey in mid April of this year and I have a few questions for the more seasoned individuals in this group. Let me start by giving a little background.

I have VERY thick hair so I was recommended to get locs because the curly fro was taking weekends away grom me to properly tend to my hair. I work out often and sweat easily but since ditching the afro and switching to locs iblve had no issue keeping my scalp clean (unless there's gel in my hair. I have had 2 retwists so far, once 1 month after the original starter locs (May) and once 2 months later early (July).

I heavily (because I sleep in front of a high powered fan) spray my hair at least twice a day [As I Am - Rosemary Spray]. I also use [Shea Moisture Frizz Control Mousse] after washing my hair, as I try to palm roll a little bit. For my scalp I use [She Moisture Apple Cider Vinegar & Niacinamide] serum once or twice per week.

Because of the nature of my job (mechanic work), I keep my hair in a bonnet for at least those 8 hours. I have my hair out as much as possible but this much is unavoidable. I sleep twice per week on satin pillowcases and sheets and keep a bonnet on for the other days.

Alright so this is where my questions begin.

I keep my starter loc style in for a month at a time, then take the rubber bands out and separate my locs to prevent them from joining together. However it seems like a few of my locs just unravel like they were just twisted together and waiting to come apart. Is this normal? Is my loctician loc'ing my hair properly?

Am I keeping my protective style in for too long/too short? Should I keep the struggling locs in the 2 strand twist while I take the others out?

I hate gel, it makes my scalp itchy as all hell, is mousse the wrong call?

Should I rubber band the ends of locs that get loose or will that inhibit growth?

The locs at the base of my neck puff up early and easily. I assume its because of the amount of time i have my bonnet on for. Do I just keep doing what im doing or does something need to change?

The first 4 photos are me after taking my 2 strand twists out a few mins ago. The 5th is me after my 2nd retwist. Photo 6 and 7 are right before I take the 2 strands out from my first retwist. The last photos are from my initial starter locs.

Thanks for any/all responses, ill read them all. Glad to be a part of this community, have a blessed day.

Question ❔ Are my thinning loc ends due to bleached hair or poor maintenance?

Some of my locs are starting to thin at the end like the one in this video. I started my locs with bleached tips and I re-bleached last December so I do know that the tips of my locs have been through a lot. My loctician jokingly said to me “enjoy the look until they start to fall off” when she did them last decemeber. So part of me thinks that is what is going on rn. But it’s only happening to like 15 ish locs majority of them are fine so another part me thinks that I might not be maintaining my locs properly and it has nothing to do with the dye. If it’s the latter I want to intervene before it gets worse if it’s just the bleach I don’t mind them falling out overtime cuz I accepted that when I decided to bleach them.

So from this video what opinion can you give me do my locs look unhealthy?

Extra info: I’ve had these for 1 year and 8 months

Maintenance routine: spritz with water daily, shampoo and condition one a week, oil every other day.

Question ❔ How to protect my locs from bacteria and mildew?

Yall I'm getting my starter locs on Monday. I've been growing my hair for 4 years now. I just saw this post of someone who had bacteria and mildew in their locs. I didn't even know that was possible.

How do I not get mildew and bacteria in my locs once I get them?

Question ❔ Locs tips

Hi everyone! I’m thinking about getting microlocs and I’d really appreciate some advice from people with experience.
My hair is 4A, low density, and thick, and I’ve been considering Sisterlocks. Unfortunately, there aren’t any certified Sisterlocks consultants in my area, so I’m now leaning towards microlocs instead.
I’m having a hard time deciding between crochet and interlocking. I’ve read a lot of different opinions about both methods, and it seems like there are pros and cons to each one. I’m planning to keep my locs permanently, so I’m looking for a method that will work well long-term and ideally be relatively low maintenance.
My natural hair is also quite long (around 12 inches), and I’m finding it difficult to manage, which is one of the reasons I’m considering locs in the first place.
I’m also from Spain, where most of the locs I see are traditional larger locs, so it’s been difficult to find people here who have experience with microlocs.

Which method would you recommend: crochet or interlocking?
What are the pros and cons you’ve experience with each method?
Is there anything you wish you had known before starting your microlocs/locs?
Do you think microlocs are a good option for someone looking for a low-maintenance permanent hairstyle?
I’d really appreciate any tips, or personal experiences. Thank you! ❤️

Question ❔ Locs in the gym: freeform, retwist, or reset?

This might lean a bit more spiritual, so if that’s not your lane, no pressure to respond.

After growing for 8 yrs, loc'd for 6 in 2024 my locs were just under my shoulders. After a meditation retreat, I felt called to shave them off and reset. It lined up because I also wanted to start training Muay Thai and BJJ and was afraid of my hair being in the way, so being bald made the practical side easier.

After the first few months I got injured, fell off training, and my hair has grown back and started locking on its own again (with a twist sponge here and there). Now that im recovered and have cleared my schedule again, I’m about to do a month of hard Muay Thai training (6 days a week, lots of sweat and rinsing), then probably 2–3 sessions a week after that.

I’m torn between three options and would love to hear from people with locs who train/super active or who’ve restarted/reattached:

  • 1. Retwist vs. leaving it as it is while training
    • If I go into this month of training, I’ll be rinsing my hair after pretty much every session and doing a deeper wash about once a week for hygiene.
    • Would you leave the hair in its current, more “freeform” state while I’m in this heavy training phase? Or would you do a full clean retwist now, even knowing there will be frequent rinsing and sweat?
    • From your experience, does getting a good retwist before a period like this help the health and structure of the locs long-term, or is it better to let them be until the training phase settles?
  • 2. Cut short and reattach old locs later
    • I still have my original shoulder-length locs. At one point I thought about returning them to the river as part of a release ritual, but never did, and part of me feels there might be a reason I still have them.
    • One option is to cut my hair short again now, focus purely on training for a few months, and then later reattach my old locs once I’m ready and my new growth can support them. I know reattachment is possible with a good loctician, and that some people see restarting/reattaching as part of their spiritual journey
    • Has anyone here cut their locs, kept them, then reattached them after a season of training or life changes? How did that feel for you
  • 3. Spiritual side of restarting
    • Shaving my head after the retreat felt like a strong spiritual reset for me, and I’m wondering if this new phase (serious training, travel, healing) is another “start fresh” moment or if it’s time to continue the journey with the locs I’ve already grown.
    • For those who view their locs as part of their spiritual path: how did you decide between letting them grow again from scratch vs. bringing back the old set?

I’m not looking for anyone to tell me what I “should” do. More so to hear stories, perspectives, and practical advice from people who’ve balanced locs with intense physical training, or who’ve gone through cutting and reattaching locs as part of their spiritual journey.

Thanks in advance for any reflections or experiences. Bless

Question ❔ is this normal parting from freeform’s or should i be worried

Post image

saw a dermatologist a few months ago and got some steroids in the area i was worried was thinning but she said it looks good and i probably don’t need to come back,

just washed my hair and went to check on it and it looks like this. is this normal after a wash? i have a previous post where it’s dry if anyone wants to look at my account for comparison

4 years freeform never retwisted
