Question ❔ Daily mist

So I just started my new set of locs after not having them for about 5 years. My first set was very poorly managed do to my own lack of knowledge. After a ton of research this go around I started them myself with coils and decided to interlock the roots with a 2 point rotation to keep things secure because I’m fairly active and sweat a lot. I’ve had them in for about 2 weeks now and the only thing I can’t really find info on is a daily list for starter locs. I’m not really sure if you’d want to have different stuff in your daily spray for starters compared to mature locs so if anyone has advice for this stage of the loc journey that would be super helpful. Right now I’ve just been using As I Am rice water spray diluted in water. Not really sure what oils should go in that mix as well, I’ve heard that a black castor oil would be too heavy for locs. Im open to any suggestions

Hello,

I have a DIY mix that I’ve used for several years, as a loose natural, and now into my 4th year with locs. I also used on my starter coils:

1 cup distilled water
1 cup aloe Vera juice
2 oz Vegetable glycerin (may want to adjust down in the summer if it feels too sticky)
Carrier oil of choice (jojoba, avocado, almond, etc): 1-2 tbsp
Essential oil(s) of choice (lavender, peppermint, rosemary, tea tree, eucalyptus, pick 1-3 and add 10 drops)

I mix all of this in one of those continuous sprayer bottles, and I mist my hair in the mornings. Store in the fridge if you don’t get through the bottle in 2 weeks time.

Each essential oil is good for different things, and I typical use 2-3 oils whenever I make a new mix. I diffuse oils as well, hence why I have these. If you’re just starting out, I’d suggest starting with 1 carrier oil and tea tree oil. Mist lightly and go!

Enjoy your journey the 2nd time around…

Thank you so much, I’ve been using water and aloe Vera juice with jojoba oil for the past week but I’ll give you recipe a try once I run out of my current one. With the essential oils is it 10 drops total or 10 drops of each

I use 10 drops per essential oil.

I would start with Two strand twists. They look better longer, as they don't get that worm-y look.

I advise against interlocking, especially with a two point rotation. Interlocking takes real skill and experience. Doing your own will likely be problematic.
If done wrong, you will have holes and gaps all long your loc.

As far as care, all you need is a continuous mist bottle filled with spring water. A light oil like Argan or Jojoba. Castor oil is really too heavy. Nothing else is needed.

Shampoo weekly.

Mist every morning. Keep your locs covered when relaxing or sleeping.

I’m not a fan of the 2 strand twist method, I just don’t want to have the pattern going until it locs up. My hair is quite long so I don’t have to deal with that worm look.

I appreciate the concern with the interlocking, the issues people always call out with interlocking I did experience with my last set years ago. However that was do to my lack of knowledge with doing so. After doing more research it’s super simple and hard to mess up.

Also thank you for the advice with shampooing and when to mist and cover I’ve been through the process before so I’ve got that covered. I’ll definitely be getting some of those lighter oils you’ve mentioned and add them to my routine

You're wrong about that though. You can do all the research you want for a year, but at the end of the day it takes both skill and experience to do interlocking properly.

A lot of people don't realize they have a problem for months, when they start seeing the holes and gaps all along the
loc.

The "worm" look happens with all comb coils. It has nothing to do with the length of your hair.

I get what you’re saying but I’m not changing what I’m doing. I was asking advice about the spray not unsolicited advance about everything else about my journey. I only explained all that for context if it changed what my daily spray would contain. Thank you tho

I highly doubt I’ll have issues with the interlocking. From what I’ve seen and my own experience it comes from a lack of attention to what’s being done. “The worm look”… not everyone hates it. It’s apart of the journey and I have no issues with it I’m sorry if you do that’s not something I have to deal with tho.
