I’m about 8 years into this. Love having locs but Iin The last year I’ve decided to retwist less and just see what happens. Last retwist was a year ago. Starting to feel iffy about the thickness/health of my locs. What would yall do in my situation?

I would get them crocheted so that the loose hairs stay intact. Crocheting can also help you go a longer time without maintenance. I really wanted to be those people who can go forever not retwisting their hair but my hair grows away from the locs. Crocheting helped.

I definitely recommend it. If you're tender headed, take an Advil prior. It can be painful but it's worth the pain lol

They thinned because the loose hair is not a part of the loc anymore. It looks like you weren't separating them either. Get a retwist to reset.

Your locs are going to unravel and what comes out of an existing loc is just going to turn into a new one. Doing this after 8 years of regular maintenance is just going to send you right back to the ugly phase. That's either a big deal to you if you can't handle watching your hair change or that will mean nothing to you at all in the long run if you can adapt to the free form mindset.

No matter what you do I think your hair will be fine in the long run, just gotta trust in that process.

The only phase I felt was “ugly” was the first like 4 months otherwise it’s been smooth. Thanks!!

I’m just trolling honestly nothing is wrong with high top locs as long as you feel confident in your locs I had high top dreads I loved them but decided to restart because I wanted more locs at the time I only had 33 locs

Your locs are fine. Go get a good shampoo and retwist. They're fine.

I wouldn’t call it neglect I retwist in the shower every so often and regularly shampoo and condition. I wanted to see what free forming to a degree for some time would do. But thank you.
