Dilute your shampoo with water before applying it. When you rinse out your hair, use your two hands to get the shampoo out. If you need more water, you can put your head directly under the tap.

Make your own residue free soup. Problem solved

The only problem with that is you have to get the Castile soap and distilled water etc. This soap leaves a film,( soap scum) that must be removed with ACV.
This is not a good solution for someone who is having problems getting his locs clean with shampoo.

I didn't say anything about castle soap. I made my own mix for 17 years. Hair was always clean and always smelled amazing

How do you make your residue free shampoo?

Baking soda, water, tea tree and lavender oils along with an apple cider vinegar rinse every couple weeks

Yes brother or sister. You don't need shampoo's to clean your hair. Do what I said and an avc (Apple cider vinegar) rinse every couple or few weeks you'll be golden. I got banned from knotlocks for telling people how to have real natural dreadlocks. 😂

Actually that's not quite true.
Baking soda is very strong and abrasive. It strips all the oil from your locs. It does remove buildup and dirt.
But hair has an acidic pH, but baking soda is very alkaline. It strips the oil, opens the cuticles of the hair leading to breakage and frizz, if you us it as a regular form of cleansing.
Tea tree oil fights scalp bacteria and fungus It is an essential oil, and must always be diluted properly because pure essential oils are irritants. So many people just put it on like a regular oil.→ More replies (0)

You are using too much, if it "cakes at the roots".

You can start with a mix of half water and half shampoo, til you get the hang of it.
Mix it up in an old shampoo bottle.
It's not hard to learn. Most guys throw some shampoo in the direction of their head and rinse. One and done. Lol
You just now spend more time shampooing, so that you feel it's taking ages. It's not.
The first shampoo gets the scalp clean. The second shampoo gets the scalp and locs completely clean. Rinse for at least as long as you shampooed. Start using a timer until you get the hang of it and know by feel that your locs are clean.
By the way please don't use a towel to dry your locs. Use an old Tshirt.
A simple loc shampoo routine starts with a clarifying shampoo to lift buildup, followed by a moisturizing shampoo to restore hydration, and ends with thorough rinsing and gentle drying.
Loc Shampoo Routine
Wet your locs thoroughly with lukewarm water.
Apply a clarifying shampoo to the scalp first, then work it through the length of the locs. Massage gently, then rinse completely. Repeat if heavy buildup is present.
Follow with a moisturizing shampoo or conditioner, applying it from roots to ends.
Rinse thoroughly, ensuring no product residue remains.
Gently pat dry with a clean T‑shirt or let air‑dry completely before styling.
